Burglars caught within 24 hours of crime

web posted October 20, 2005

TRENTON – A Woodward Lake Road man called the Edgefield County Sheriff’s Department Tuesday afternoon stating someone had broken into his shop and stolen several tools and other items. Deputy Willie Callaham responded to the call and found a door that had been “kicked in” to gain access to the building.

Once inside the burglars unbolted an air compressor from a trailer and stole a second air compressor and a paint machine with a total value near $3,000. A wrench used and left at the scene was dusted from fingerprints along with other areas of the scene. Photos of footprints and tire tracks were also taken.

A neighbor told Chief Investigator Randy Doran that a red truck was seen near the area around 1:00 pm. The homeowner said he believed the person or persons responsible were from the Murphy Village area.

Deputies searched for the truck and stopped a similar truck a short time later driven by two teenage boys. Investigator Doran said they spoke to the youths who said they had no knowledge of the burglary. However, Wednesday morning their statements and the evidence did not match and by Wednesday afternoon the two teens were arrested.

The two young men are ages 17 and 15 and were being processed before being transferred to Columbia. The evidence collected is being compared to other cases to see if the two were responsible for other similar crimes reported in the area.

Due to the ages of the individuals their names have not been released.

Another call of a reported theft of a pit bull was reported on the 200 block of Sandy Springs Road the day before with a description of a red truck. That homeowner followed the truck until he lost them as they entered Murphy Village.

It is unknown if the two crimes are related.
