Months long undercover investigations result in drug arrests

web posted October 28, 2008
EDGEFIELD – The Edgefield County Sheriff’s Office and Johnston Police have made two arrests after months of undercover drug operations in Johnston. According to information provided by the Sheriff’s Narcotics Division, the investigations date back as far as early April and culminated in the arrests over the past few days. Dexter Ramon Smith, 23, and Cordera Michael Moore 21, both of Johnston, are facing multiple drug charges between the two.

Mr. Smith was arrested last Tuesday and charged with manufacture, distribution, or possession of Schedule l, drugs (LSD) and Schedule ll drugs, (Cocaine) 3rd or subsequent offense and distribution of drugs within the proximity of a school or park. He was released the following day on bond. According to court records, Mr. Smith has several other drug distribution charges pending against him for an arrest in February on 2007.

Cordera Michael Moore is facing two drug charges, possession of drugs with the intent to distribute and distribution of drugs in the proximity of a school or park. Court records show this to be Mr. Moore’s first offence. He was released on Saturday on bond, jail records show.

Bond amounts were not available. A court date of December 12 is scheduled for both men.

The Sheriff’s Narcotics Division works drug cases for extended amounts of time before an arrest can be made. Some cases, they say, can take up to a year before charges are brought forward due to the complexity of the undercover work involved. Often times Investigators are working off tips called in to the Sheriff’s Office.

Callers with information of drug activity can remain anonymous. To report drug activity in your area simply call the Sheriff’s Office at 637-5337 or 278-1625.
