Arrest
made in burglary within 48 hours of crime
web posted November 11, 2005 MERRIWETHER – Around 8:30 pm Tuesday evening Protect America Alarm Company notified the Edgefield County Sheriff’s Office that there was a burglary alarm going off at a Murrah Forrest Drive home in Merriwether. Deputy George Dedmondt responded to the call and found a man driving out of the property. The man presented identification and stated he was a friend of the homeowner and had knocked on the door, then checked it which set off the alarm. His information was taken and he was allowed to leave. As Deputy Dedmondt continued to check the property he found the home had actually been broken into. Deputy Dedmondt then tried to relocate the man, who gave the name Randy Ray Mashburn, on Murrah Road since he had just left. Deputies were unable to locate the man. The home had a set of double doors on the back side of the house which had been pushed in then pulled back together to make it appear they were locked. The homeowner stated a 30.06 rifle was missing from the home. A check of the tag number of the 1999 Silver Honda Accord Mr. Mashburn was driving showed it to be stolen from Aiken County. Investigator Phil Ireland investigated the burglary and was able to locate the man just inside Aiken County on Thursday morning and notified the Aiken County Sheriff’s Office for assistance. The man left the home driving the stolen car and then entered another home not far away. Officers confronted the Mr. Mashburn, whose North Carolina driver’s license had also come back as suspended, and was taken into custody on a warrant for burglary in the second degree, a felony. Investigator Ireland said a warrant for possession of a stolen vehicle was also being sought and Deputy Dedmondt may be seeking further warrants relating to the episode. Upon booking Mr. Mashburn into custody it was discovered he had given officers a false name, “Randy Ray Mashburn is an alias,” Investigator Ireland said. The man’s real name is Roger Dale Mashburn, 42, of Swanzy Street East in Elizabethtown North Carolina. “We are not sure of his age,” Investigator Ireland said since Mr. Mashburn has two dates of birth and may have several identities. Mr. Mashburn is currently being held in the Edgefield County Detention Center awaiting a bond hearing for the two current felony charges. Other charges may be pending the outcome of the investigation which continues. The stolen rifle has not been recovered at this time. For
