Stolen check copied, spent, and respent five times for over $1000
web posted November 18, 2005

TRENTON – A Jacob McKie Road resident mailed a check from her mailbox for an insurance payment of a little over $100 that has turned into over $1000 that has been taken from her bank account the woman learned Monday. Someone has supposedly found a way to copy the check and then reproduced it several times and has been writing the checks around the county. To date $1,053 has been written in checks that all have the same check number to at least five businesses.

Investigator Phil Ireland is investigating the matter and the woman has no idea who would do such a thing. The checks were drawn on the North Augusta Wachovia and a representative stated they had no idea how the checks would get run through the account with all containing the same check number. “(The customer) will get their money back,” she said adding that Wachovia had an excellent fraud division.

Investigators are tracing back the activity of the person responsible and speaking to store and business owners who took the checks for payment. Any video surveillance that may be available will also be reviewed in hopes of identifying the suspect. The investigation is ongoing and police did not comment on the case.

Sheriff Adell Dobey just released a warning to county residents about protecting your identity and how to handle mailing in payments for bills.
