Check, credit car theft and fraud on the rise
web posted November 23, 2005

COUNTY – Credit card and check thefts and fraud continue to plague the county as three more reports of either checks in the mail being stolen or credit cards being used to defraud the owners out of money have been reported.

A woman on the 400 block of Jacob McKie Road reported that someone had stolen checks from her mailbox. Those checks, she reported, contained credit card information as well as Social Security numbers. The accounts and cards have been closed and the theft reported to her financial institution. Sheriff Adell Dobey has issued an advisory not to place outgoing mail with such information in your unprotected mailboxes and rather at a US Postal Service mailbox or post office.

In addition a Stevens Creek Drive woman in Merriwether reported that her Visa card had been used to make a $1,500 cash advance and an $800 purchase in Ohio and Kentucky. The woman stated she had visited the area in September but did not make the cash advance or purchase. She also stated she had not lost her credit card and was not aware of the charges until her bill came.

A Trenton man reported that his daughter had possession of his Sears Gold Mastercard and another individual obtained it and charged more than $10,000 to the account.

With the increase in identity thefts and stolen checks on the rise residents are asked to take measures to protect themselves from such thefts and fraud. To read Edgefield County Sheriff Adell Dobey’s advisory on how to protect yourself click here
