Escaped convict places local law enforcement on high alert

web posted December 5, 2006

COUNTY – Edgefield County authorities were put on alert due to an escaped prisoner Monday morning around 11:30am from the Lower Savannah Pre-release Center while on a work detail in Aiken County. The Center is a minimum-security facility located in Aiken. Authorities say Ronnie Ledale Gunnells, 32, walked away from a job site and may be traveling in a red 1995 Jeep Cherokee with a South Carolina tag number 363 VTT. The SUV is said to be “very dirty”.

Gunnells is described as a white male, 5’ 9” tall weighing 170 pounds with brown eyes and brown hair and a tattoo (Lil Devil) on his left shoulder and a scar over his left eye. He was last scene wearing an All American work uniform with a blue shirt, jeans, and boots. Mr. Gunnells may be trying to make his way to Greenville SC. He was serving a five-year sentence for a conviction on Grand Larceny in Greenwood at the time of the escape. His projected parole date is listed as December 23, 2006 by the Department of Corrections.

Anyone with information is asked to call 911. Authorities ask that you do not attempt to make contact with the fugitive.
