SPORTS – A game that means so much for so many from
two neighboring communities will encompass the very meaning of the word
rivalry, under the lights of Strom Thurmond’s stadium, Friday
night. This rivalry is established. It has been since
before Strom Thurmond consolidated from the Johnston Bears and
Edgefield Bulldogs in 1961. Rebels vs Tigers will always bring
out the best of both teams, coaches and fans.

SPORTS – The Saluda-Thurmond series has been a
special rivalry for so many years due to the schools close proximity
and the relationships of both communities. Most players, on each
team, have family and/or friends on the other side of the field.
This game is about pride; family, school and community pride when these
two teams meet up on the gridiron. The following article features a
father and son combination in which the father played for Saluda and
the son for Strom Thurmond. They are truly a house divided during game
week of Saluda vs Strom Thurmond.

SPORTS – Strom Thurmond leads the region in
defensive points allowed after a 20-7 win over Laney. Columbia lost to
AC Flora 33-32 but leads the region in points scored and Eau Claire
picked up their first win of the season over CA Johnson 19-0, in a game
that was called at halftime due to inclement weather.

– One packed house, one electric atmosphere
and six turnovers told the story of Strom Thurmond pulling away from
Laney in the waning moments of Friday night’s football game, 20-7.The
Blue Steel defense continued to silence the critics and shutdown
opponents, while grabbing their 7th interception and 2nd fumble in just
two games. They also proved the Williston shutout was no fluke
but instead great defense.

Williston had just driven 53 yards in seven plays to Strom’s 20 yard
line. On 3rd and five, after a Blue Devil timeout, Williston
quarterback Tamyn Garrick throws to the corner of the endzone toward
highly touted Mr. Everything Dexter Staley. But Blue Steel
defensive back Cody Johnson went up and took the ball from Staley,

ROCK HILL – Newberry College leads the way on the
2010 Preseason All-South Atlantic Conference football team, which was
released by the league office today. The Wolves have a conference-best
10 selections, with three players on the first team and seven on the
second team. The Wolves are predicted to finish fourth in conference
play according to the annual coaches' poll, which was also released on
Thursday. Among the 10 standouts is Johnston resident Matt Holmes.

years Strom Thurmond will be losing an offensive coordinator.
Chad Leaphart has accepted the head coaching position at Swansea High
School. Leaphart, who has been an assistant football coach at
Strom Thurmond since 2000, says this is what all assistants strive for.
He hates to leave STHS, but is excited about the opportunity of running
his own team.

be gearing up for next year’s football season before you know it, and
one thing they can count on is the return of Cullen Rhoden as punter.
Rhoden was recently named as a First All-State player for 2009 by The
State newspaper. As a sophomore, Rhoden averaged 41.3 yards a punt with
42 punts on the year.

the outstanding coaching, talent and athleticism of this team did not

SPORTS – The Strom Thurmond Rebels went
down fighting in the third round of the playoffs Friday night against
last year’s opponent Pageland Central with a score of 14-9. After
trailing 14-3 at the half, the Rebels came alive in the fourth quarter
to tack on another 6 points but failed to score on a 2-point
conversion. With only minutes to go in the fourth quarter, the Rebels
took over after an interception and inspired the Rebels supporters that
a win was still within their grasp.

SPORTS – It’s the third round of the South
Carolina AA State Playoffs and Strom Thurmond (10-2) will take the road
to Pageland to face the Central Eagles (10-2). It’s approximately
a 2 hour 45 minute drive, so leave early to make it on time. Last
season, the town of Pageland shutdown as nearly all of its citizens
were in Johnston, packed into Strom Thurmond’s stadium. Now it’s
our time to return the favor by packing out their stadium.

receiver turned quarterback did an exceptional job while filling in for
the injured Raleigh Yeldell. Davis was 7 of 8 attempts for 81 yards
passing with no interceptions. He also rushed 16 times for 145 yards
with two touchdowns. He topped his night off with a two-point

SPORTS – Eau Claire (1-9, 1-4) grabbed the
number four seed in region IV with a victory over Lee Central in region
play. There was a three way tie for the final playoff spot in
region IV and the Shamrocks beat out Andrew Jackson and Lee Central by
allowing the fewest points in their games among each other. The
Shamrocks are now in the playoffs and on their way to Strom Thurmond
(8-2, 5-0) this Friday.

JOHNSTON – The Merriwether Middle School
football team turned the tide on the ten year domination of Edgefield
County football by defeating the J.E.T. Middle School team 14 to 6 in a
thriller Thursday night. MMS dominated the first half with touchdowns
scored by Nate Bright and Kenyatta Dunbar. Michael Almond added the
extra points with perfect soccer style kicks to put MMS ahead of JET 14
- 0 at the half.

Strom Thurmond High School finished 3rd at the 3A State
Tournament that was played in Conway at Quail Creek Golf Course.
There is not a 2A State tournament and we are the only 2A team to
qualify for this tournament so we call ourselves the” 2A State Champs”
We were only 6 shots out of the lead and shot 324 the first day and 314
the final day.

SPORTS – The final week of regular season
play has arrived in 2A football and as usual, Strom Thurmond has things
wrapped up. Strom Thurmond captured their fifth region title in the
previous six seasons, last Friday putting the Rebels 28-1 under Lee
Sawyer in region play and will look to make it 29-1 this week.
They have earned a #1 seed and will be guaranteed two home playoff

Region III football is all about will meet Friday for a showdown with a
lot at stake. The Bulldogs and Rebels are hard nose, physical and

SPORTS – “I told my guys at halftime, this
game is too close and we cannot continue to let them hang around.”
Strom Thurmond head coach Lee Sawyer about Thurmond’s 9-0 halftime
lead. The entire team got the message. Demarkus Smith returned the
second half kickoff 25 yards to the Saluda 41 yard line. On the first
play from scrimmage Raleigh Yeldell took a quarterback keeper around
the right end for a touchdown. Sam Northrop kicked the point after and
Thurmond led 16-0 with 11:43 remaining in the third. The Rebels never
looked back from that point on.

(5-2) record up highway 121 to battle the Tigers of Saluda High (2-5)

Ridge Spring-Monetta will begin their season with the trip to Johnston.
Head Coach Mark Rodgers says the team is healthy and will have had nine
good practice days to prepare for ST, by Friday night. Last season RSM
finished 5-6, losing in the first round of the playoffs to Christ
Church. The Trojan offense averaged 14.9 ppg and their defense allowed

CHAPIN – In a hard fought battle Friday
night, the Strom Thurmond Rebels failed to overcome a 21-point rally by

Softball Team has won the Region 4-A title for the third year in a row.

they are worthy of their undefeated record by dominating the Southside
Tigers by a score of 61-27 Saturday night. The play of the game came
with 8 minutes remaining in the 3rd quarter with Rebel’s leading 28-13
and the momentum shifting towards Southside. The Southside Tigers
forced the Strom Thurmond punt in a scoreless third quarter. After an
errant snap, Rebel kicker Ren Fell was forced to chase the ball
catching up with it at the Rebel 20 yard line while he was being chased

SPORTS – The liquid sunshine was steady
throughout the night, but it wasn’t enough precipitation to drown out
the fireworks that Coach Lee Sawyer brought to the show. Saluda
received the opening kickoff and it only took two plays for Tra’ves
Bush to sniff out an interception from the Tiger offense. The
Rebel offense took the field and moved 38 yards in 7 plays before Javon
Brown called his own number from 12 yards out to put Thurmond on the
scoreboard, with 8:37 to go in the 1st quarter. The Rebels missed
the point after attempt because of a high snap and wet ball leaving the
Rebels a 6-0 lead.

SPORTS – The 3rd quarter separated the men
from the boys. Ren Fell opened the second half with a touchback,
the Blue Steel defense held for a three and out, and the Rebel offense
marched 51 yards, in seven plays and four minutes, behind a very game
offensive line, to pull Strom Thurmond away, 20-6. The Rebel
defense only allowed the Panthers 17 yards, on three possessions, and

started the 2008 football season off with a bang after defeating Long
Cane Academy 42-20 on Friday night. The first quarter proved to be

RIDGE SPRING – The Strom Thurmond Rebels
continued to show their dominance on the gridiron Friday night with
another resounding victory, this time with a 49-12 win over Ridge
Spring Monetta. The Rebel’s Dylan Durham put the game away early in the
2nd quarter with a 42 yard punt return for a touchdown that gave the
Rebels a 35-0 lead. Strom Thurmond dominated the line of scrimmage on
both sides of the ball all night and through the first half of play
Ridge Spring had only two first downs, 29 rushing yards and 26
receiving yards.

SPORTS – Week 1 of South Carolina High
School Football has arrived and now things are in full swing across the
state. Last week the Rebels shut out a solid Chapin team and this
week they look to improve on their 1-0 record, as they take on the
Mighty Trojans of Ridge Spring-Monetta High. Last weeks Chapin game can
be used, somewhat, as a measuring stick going into region play because
the Eagles play three other Region III teams; Gilbert, Newberry and Mid
Carolina.

GREENWOOD - James "Fish" Herrin is a true
believer. He knows that no matter the situation, his ballplayers have
what it takes to get the job done. Herrin, head coach of the Johnston
Dixie Youth Majors All-Star team (Under 12), got yet another lesson in
the toughness and perseverance of his troops during District Three play
in Greenwood.
Playing in its first game against Clinton, lost 3-1 and found itself in
the loser's bracket after just the first game. But the team returned on
Sunday and won their game 18-5 against Calhoun Falls.

JOHNSTON – A late rally came up short as
the Wilson High Tigers defeated Strom Thurmond 21-14 to advance in the
Class AAA State football playoffs Friday night.
Wilson, now 10-3, will get the chance to avenge an earlier loss to
Crestwood who downed previously unbeaten Myrtle Beach 37-28.

Club would like to invite everyone out to "Meet the Rebels". The Rebel
opponents for the event will be "The Predators" from the independant
Fox Creek Charter High School. The Lady Rebels will start at 7:00 and
the Rebels will take the court at 8:00.

Cougars in the first round of the Class AAA Lower State Playoffs Friday
night.The Rebels, now 7-4, will travel to face Marlboro County this
Friday in a second round game. Strom Thurmond took advantage of a
turnover to put the first points on the board.

in the regular season finale for both teams Friday. The second place

Laney Memorial Stadium was preparing for overtime with Strom Thurmond
when Cameron Stallings found Courtney Roundtree on an 11-yard touchdown
pass and 13-7 win. The touchdown pass came with just 3.5 seconds left
on the clock. Stallings kept the play alive by putting his hand on the
ground for balance after nearly going down in a tackle.
