SPORTS – The Rebels slid to 5-4 on the season after an 18-15 loss to Batesburg-Leesville, snapping a six year region title reign for the Rebels. The final regular season game will be this Friday night when Ninety Six visits. A lot is on the line as places 2nd thru 5th are up for grabs in Region II. A victory ensures post season play for the Rebels, while a loss could throw them to 3rd thru 5th pending on the outcome of Abbeville vs Crescent. Get your Halloweening completed early and come out to support the team.

SPORTS – Strom Thurmond (5-4, 2-2) did not relinquish a six year region title reign without a fight.  Batesburg-Leesville (7-2, 4-0), a heavy favorite coming into the game, earned the AA Region II title Friday night by escaping Johnston with an 18-15 win in a game that was not decided until the final second ticked off the clock. Two costly first half turnovers for the Rebels, kept the game close going into the 3rd quarter.

SPORTS – On Saturday, October 11, 2014, Hampton Ratcliffe traveled to Columbia, SC to compete in the South Carolina High School 3A State Championship Swim meet. Hampton is a sophomore at Fox Creek High School. This is the first year the school has had a swim team for several years and Hampton was the only swimmer who qualified for the state meet.

The Rebels looked to be on cruise control after clicking on all cylinders, jumping ahead 24-0 midway thru the 3rd quarter, but two Saluda scores with successful two point conversions followed by a blocked punt put the game in question late in the 4th.

SPORTS – The Strom Thurmond Rebels (3-3, 0-1) look to get back in the win column Friday night when the Crescent Tigers (3-3, 0-1) come to town. After a strong 3-0 start to the season the Rebels have sputtered offensively in their last three games, averaging only 13 points per outing during three consecutive losses. Strom Thurmond’s defense gave up a season high 33 points to Abbeville a week ago and will be looking for redemption this week. The Rebels have been down, but they are not out.

SPORTS – The Edgefield Xtreme 12U baseball team defeated the North Augusta Chaos, 5-3 Tuesday night behind 5 strong innings from pitcher, Dalton Williams.  The 12 year old would get the start and go the distance, allowing only 3 hits while striking out 8 and walking 5.  Edgefield would take an early lead in the 1st inning when Daniel Herlong would single, steal second base and score on an infield ground out by Dalton Williams.  Kevin Ortega would follow Williams, draw a base on balls and eventually score on a Jacob Rushton single.

SPORTS – The Abbeville Panthers halted a four game losing skid by stunning the visiting Strom Thurmond Rebels 33-14 Friday night at Hite Stadium in Abbeville.
The first meeting between the two football powers in 25 years looked like a mismatch on paper- but the Panthers jumped out to a 14-0 first quarter lead and went on to dominate the game until the final whistle, answering three Rebel turnovers with touchdowns.

SPORTS – A Rebel team decimated with injuries battled one of the top teams in the state last Friday night for their final non region contest. Offensive player of the week was Deandre Ryan. Ryan, filling in for injured quarterback Tyree Stidem, did an admiral job of keeping the Rebels in the game for four quarters. Defensive player of the week goes to Tannor Byrd. Byrd snagged his team leading 3rd interception of the season and gathered six tackles. Both are juniors.

The junior took on a new role as quarterback in Friday’s prime time matchup against North Augusta due to Tyree Stidem nursing an ankle injury sustained last week at South Aiken. “Deandre did an outstanding job tonight considering the circumstances. SPORTS – The undefeated North Augusta Yellow Jackets (4-0) travel to Strom Thurmond (3-1) for one of the biggest games in the CSRA Friday night.The Rebels are coming off a disappointing 16-13 loss at South Aiken. “I think the guys responded well at practice this week. We corrected some things, but overall we just had to stay positive. What we do isn’t broken, just have to learn from our mistakes and move forward by playing a complete game,” Rebel head coach Antwuan Hillary said.

SPORTS – Strom Thurmond was up 13-2 with 9:55 to play and it seemed they were on their way to overcoming a game marred by rain, penalties and miscues at South Aiken Friday night. Immediately following Cole Fell’s 20 yard field goal which put the Rebels up 11 points in the 4th quarter, a ten to fifteen minute stoppage of play due to an illness on South Aiken’s sideline, resulted in a drastic turn around in the game’s momentum.

SPORTS – The Strom Thurmond Rebels (3-0) are coming off a big win over Midland Valley and will continue their all Aiken County non region schedule this week with a trip to South Aiken (1-2). The Rebel offense, led by senior Tyree Stidem, has scored 42 points in each of its last two outings. Stidem is 31-53-526 yards and four touchdowns through the air which leads the area in passing. The Thoroughbreds picked up their first win of the season with a 35-14 victory over Glenn Hills last week.

SPORTS – The high flying Rebels improved to 3-0 after stabilizing the Mustangs of Midland Valley Friday night 42-14. Junior Wide Receiver Padgett Sumner was selected as offensive player of the game.  Sumner had 4 catches 89 yards and one score.  The entire defensive line was recognized for their performance in getting four sacks and helping hold Midland Valley to their lowest offensive output of the season.

SPORTS –  The Lady Rebels Volleyball team won their season opener by a score of 3-0. The Lady Rebels had great play from a number of players. Hannah-Grace Humphries, Bailey Pedersen, Micheala Griffin and Libby Yonce all had a good night hitting. We played solid defense and the setters both had a good night. SPORTS – Flipping the calendar to August generally means just a few more weeks of extremely hot weather, days growing shorter and school returning to session. In Edgefield County we have Strom Thurmond football to complement those items. After an eight month hiatus, high school football has finally returned and the Rebels will be hitting the field this Saturday for their first scrimmage at Laurens High School. With 13 starters returning from an 11-2 season there is a lot of optimism about this year’s squad.

Featured speaker, Coach Mack Hite, addressed the 11 and 12 year olds about the game of baseball and how it will prepare them for life. "Baseball is game where you will often fail, a game where there's no one to hide behind when that failure occurs. So it teaches you to keep getting back up, to work hard and know that life isn't always fair."

SPORTS – The Edgefield County School District has announced the hiring of Mack Hite to be the new head baseball coach at Strom Thurmond High School. Coach Hite replaces Coach Christopher Zylstra who left at the end of this school year to be an assistant baseball coach and teacher at South Aiken High School.

SPORTS – Edgefield County lost their first game of the 2014 South Carolina Dixie Youth "O" Zone Tournament on Saturday to Midland, 6-5. 12 year old, Michael Feagin would get the start for ECDYB and hold Midland scoreless in the top half of the first inning. Defensive plays from Hunter Corley at second base, KJ Butler at shortstop and Feagin himself showed that ECDYB was picking up right where they had left off at the District Tournament level.

SPORTS – In 2006, 2007 and 2008 it was Johnston Dixie Youth winning the District 3 Majors Championship, while in 2012 and 2013 it was Edgefield Dixie Youth capturing the crown,  Tonight, Edgefield County brought home a 6th District Championship in 9 years. The 2014 title is the first to be captured by the merged programs, something that had been speculated on and talked about for several years, but was finally implemented this past spring.

Edgefield County O Zone All Stars Roll

SPORTS – Close, so close in fact that the ECDYB "O" Zone coaching staff has now started "warning" their charges of the pitfalls of looking ahead; however, you can't really blame this group of 11 and 12 year old players from both Johnston Dixie Youth and Edgefield Dixie Youth, merged together for the first time. Over the course of the first three games of the District 3 Tournament, the team has outscored its opponents 33-4, and look to be on their way to claiming Edgefield County's 6th District Title in nine years.

ECDYB O-Zone All Stars Down Abbeville

SPORTS – With an almost identical score from their first day win over MId Carolina on Friday, ECDYB's "O" Zone All Star team defeated Abbeville 11-1 during day two of the District 3 Tournament at Ridge Spring.  Dalton Williams would get the start on the hill for Edgefield County and turn in 3 innings of work, resulting in 1 hit, 2 walks, 1 strike out and no runs allowed.  The 11 year old right-hander was in control from the first pitch, retiring Abbeville in order in the top half of the 1st inning.

SPORTS – The Pine Ridge Club Member-Guest tournament, an annual event since 1970, kicked off Friday evening with a Par 3 contest and ended late Sunday afternoon after 36 holes of two man best ball play and a sudden death shootout. On Friday evening, Doug Raines and Donny Waters won the nine hole Par 3 event - out chipping Gary Gilley and Dan Jernigan in a sudden death playoff match in front of many spectators on the practice green.

SPORTS – Antwaun Hillary turned down an opportunity to become Head Coach of Aiken High a few years ago, holding out for a shot to take over his alma mater’s program one day. That opportunity presented itself back on March 17th when Lee Sawyer stepped down after ten years as head man of the Rebels. On Wednesday morning, at a press conference in the school’s new Fieldhouse, Hillary was named Head Coach of Strom Thurmond High’s football program.

SPORTS – Strom Thurmond is now 11-8 on the season since winning two of three games in the Sandlapper Invitational. The Rebels beat Bamburg 13-1 Wednesday night, dropped a tight one to North Augusta 5-6 (Monday) and beat out Gloucester NJ 7-6 (Saturday). Very impressive considering the amount of youth on the team as Strom Thurmond is starting 5 to 6 sophomores per game.

SPORTS – Twelve hits weren't enough for Strom Thurmond as it lost a shootout, 14-12 in seven innings, to Aiken on Monday at STHS. Brooke Benenhaley racked up three RBIs on four hits for Strom Thurmond. She singled in the first and fifth innings and doubled in the third and seventh innings.

The End of an Era: Sawyer Retires from STH

SPORTS – Strom Thurmond Head Football Coach Lee Sawyer announced his retirement today from the game of football. Coach Sawyer has been the head football coach at Strom Thurmond since 2004 and is the winningest coach in Strom Thurmond football history. Coach Sawyer coached 131 games and posted an overall record of 107-24 (.817%).  He won the 3A State Title in 2005, giving the Rebels their 2nd state championship and bringing home the gold for the first time since 1968. Sawyer’s playoff record was 22-9 (.710%) as his teams made it to at least the 3rd round of the playoffs in eight of his ten years.

SPORTS – In what is being deemed "The Battle for the Paddle" team South Carolina fell to team Georgia by a score of 24-10 in the first annual Border Bowl. Rebel linebacker and Gardner-Webb commitment Kenyatta Dunbar was nominated as defensive player of the game for South Carolina. Dunbar was in on 14 tackles and had one fumble recovery.

SPORTS – Senior quarterback Jauveer Hammond led the way for the Rebels 2nd round victory last week over North Myrtle Beach.  Hammond rushed 20 times for 145 yards and one touchdown, while also going 11-19-116yards and 1 touchdown thru the air.  Defensively linebacker Kenyatta Dunbar had 6.5 tackles, 1 sack and 1 interception to lead the Blue Steel.

SPORTS – Rebel defensive lineman Lyndon Lowery came out from the bottom of the pile with a football in his hand, causing an eruption from the home side crowd, coaches and team with 4:20 to play in a 20-17 game. The botched North Myrtle Beach snap set the Rebels up at the 8 yard line and DeAndre Ryan took a jet sweep to pay dirt on the games next play, allowing the Rebels to finally put the scrappy visitors away 27-17.

SPORTS – A surprised Lee Sawyer walked into Strom Thurmond’s Field-house about 9:30 Wednesday morning thinking he was about to meet with some football players to discuss their academics, at the instruction of Principal Jill Jett. What Sawyer, who has earned just about every football coaching record in school history over his ten seasons as head coach, didn’t realize was there was media, family, coaches, and the Carolina Panther mascot (Sir Purr) awaiting his arrival along with members of his football team.

SPORTS – Behind dominating pitching from both Michael Feagin and Rhett Jolly, the Edgefield Xtreme, 12U baseball team cruised at the Gilbert Dixie Youth Annual Fall Tournament this past Saturday. Edgefield would open tournament play against Lexington and post a 12-6 win by flexing its muscle at the plate. Michael Feagin would start on the hill and pitch two innings of no hit baseball, while on offense the 12 year old would give Edgefield the early lead with a two run blast over the left field fence in the first inning of play.

SPORTS – A scoreless first quarter gave way to a title wave of Rebel touchdowns in a 2nd quarter which saw the Rebels go up 28-0 by halftime over visiting 4th seed Darlington.  The Blue Steel held the Falcons to -17 yards on four possessions including one interception and three- three and outs during the 2nd quarter in addition to forcing an errant snap on a punt, which was recovered for a touchdown.

Lady Predators' Volleyball Season Ends with Loss

SPORTS – The Lady Predators' volleyball season came to an end on Monday in a hard fought, drama filled contest with the Bengals of Brashier Middle College. The Lady Predators found themselves down 11-1 early in the first set but regained their footing and came roaring back, closing the gap to one point before losing to the Bengals 25-23. Games two and three found the Lady Predators dominating the court with back to back wins at 25-16 each.

SPORTS – The visiting Tigers had thoughts of spoiling Strom Thurmond’s Homecoming when they jumped out 7-0 by way of a Travis Loadholt 12 yard touchdown run with 6:55 to play in the 1st quarter. But Swansea’s upset attempt was short lived as the Rebels ran off five unanswered scoring drives, going up 26-7 by halftime.

EDGEFIELD – Only two teams remain undefeated in Region V play and they will meet this Friday.  Strom Thurmond (6-1, 2-0) versus Swansea (5-2, 2-0) has all the makings of a football Friday night showdown. The Rebels lead the region in defense, allowing 16 points per game. The Tigers lead the region in offense by scoring 36 points per game.  Winner controls their own destiny for a region crown and a #1 playoff seeding, while the loser will need some help in the final two games. SPORTS – Strom Thurmond improved to 6-1 overall and 2-0 in region play after a 39-7 victory over Airport last week. The Rebels are now averaging 31 points per game offensively while only allowing 16 to their opponents. Sophomore running back Chad Gilchrist won the offensive player of the week nomination for his 152 yards on 14 carries and three touchdowns, while senior Terrance Grim took the defensive nomination for his two interceptions and 1.5 tackles.

After winning their first game the Eagles dropped three in a row by a touchdown or less. “Airport isn’t your typical 1-5 team and could easily be 4-2 right now. They are actually pretty good and due for a breakout game anytime. We have to be prepared and not let that breakout game happen against us this week” Lee Sawyer stated.

Fox Creek JV Football Plays First Home Field Game

SPORTS – Fox Creek High School’s JV football team played their fourth regular season game Thursday night, October 3, against Northside Christian School. This was the first JV football game played on campus at FCHS. Coached by Kenneth Griffin, Fox Creek put up forty-six points against their non-scoring opponent. With great execution and great team work, the players showed up and showed out.
