22nd Annual Pine Ridge Country Club Member-Guest Tournament a Success

JOHNSTON – or the 22nd time since 1991 Pine Ridge Country Club held its annual Member-Guest tournament.  The two day, best ball, tournament saw 21 teams enter into competition against each other for prizes, cash and most importantly bragging rights.

Strom Thurmond Golf Team Wins Region Title

SPORTS – The Strom Thurmond Golf Team won the Region Title this week with outstanding play during the two day Region V tournament. Clemson commit McKenzie Talbert was named MVP. Josh Chriswell and Caleb McIlvried both made the All-Region team. McIlvried shot the low score of the 1st round with an even par 72 at Hidden Valley Golf Club (Gaston SC). Day two was played at the Country Club of Lexington (Lexington SC).

SPORTS – Sophomore, Parker Wilkes would lead all Wardlaw hitters with 3 hits while picking up her 8th win of the season, as the Wardlaw Lady Patriots notched their 4th Region win of the 2013 season. Wardlaw (8-5, 4-2) would get on the board first when Freshman leadoff hitter, Brice Brown would single and then score on a Susan Medlock hit in the 1st inning.

Lady Pats Blast Anderson Christian 17-5

SPORTS – The Wardlaw Lady Pats used 11 hits to defeat Region foe Anderson Christian Tuesday night as the team continues to prepare for the upcoming State Tournament. Wardlaw (7-4 - 3-2) won't have the benefit of being one of the two top seeds when the tournament begins in May, after dropping both Region games to Laurens Academy earlier in the season. Currently, the team would be the number two seed from Region II, which would put them in the same bracket with powerhouse Colleton Prep.

Edgefield Dixie Youth Baseball to Honor 2012 District Champions

SPORTS – Edgefield Dixie Youth Baseball will hold a ceremony to honor team
members from the 2012 District 3 Championship run on Friday, April 19th at 7:00 pm. Team members, coaches, parents and sponsors will be recognized for their efforts and support. In addition, a sign commemorating the District Title will be unveiled. Last years team went undefeated through the District Tournament, earning a birth into
the State Tournament which was held in Florence.

SPORTS – 8th grader, Kylie Wash would go 2 for 2 at the plate with an RBI and 1 stolen base to help lead The Wardlaw Lady Patriots softball squad over region rival, King 7-6. Sophomore, Parker Wilkes would get the start in the circle and face 29 King batters on the night. She would strike out 6, walk 2 and give up 9 hits.

Lady Pats Register Second Win of the Week

SPORTS – The Wardlaw Lady Patriots softball team defeated Anderson Christian 14-0 Thursday afternoon and captured their first Region win of the season in the process. Wardlaw (4-3,1-1) pounded out 10 hits while converting 10 outs on the defensive side of the ball. Freshman Brice Brown would lead the Lady Pats at the plate, going 3 for 3, while scoring 2 runs and adding 2 RBI's.

SPORTS – The Strom Thurmond Varsity Team kicked the season off this week by splitting their first two matches. On Wednesday the Rebels earned a victory at Mount Vintage Plantation in a contest against Fox Creek and North Augusta, shooting a four player combined 166. Josh Criswell posted the low score of the day with a 35.

SPORTS – Rebel's Sophomore pitcher Brooke Benenhaley turned in a strong pitching performance Monday throwing a no hitter to lead the Strom Thurmond Lady Rebels to a 17-0 win over McCormick. Benenhaley faced 17 batters striking out 14.

Parker Wilkes would draw the start in the circle where the sophomore would strikeout 2 and walk, while giving up 2 hits and one run. Carrie Ann Quarles would come on in relief of Wilkes in the third inning and strikeout 1, walk 2 and give up 1 hit.

SPORTS – The Wardlaw Lady Pats opened the 2013 softball season Tuesday with a 15-0 blanking of Augusta Christian.  Freshman, Brice Brown would lead Wardlaw at the plate, going 3 for 3 with a walk, while scoring 4 runs. On the mound starting pitcher Parker Wilkes would strikeout 6, allow one hit and one walk during her 3 innings of work.

SPORTS – The gymnasium at Wardlaw Academy is alive with action.  In each corner athletes run drills, hoping the work will pay off in another State Title.  However, today the sounds of dribbling basketballs have been replaced by leather popping as the Lady Pats softball team prepares for the 2013 season. With the recent rains keeping the field too wet for practice, the team has been forced to move inside the school gym.

Leysath Signs with Lenoir-Rhyne University

SPORTS – Demetrius Leysath, hard hitting safety for the Rebel Football team, will take his talents to Lenoir-Rhyne University in Hickory, North Carolina.   Leysath was a three year starter for the Rebels and amassed 217 tackles, four interceptions, caused 8 fumbles, multiple pass breakups and had more knock-out hits than one can count. 
On Wednesday morning in the school’s library, surrounded by coaches, teammates and family, Demetrius signed his letter of intent to play for the Bears over the next four years.

Thurmond's Coach Leroy Rouse Records 100th win

JOHNSTON – Congratulations are in order and a tribute is appropriate to Strom Thurmond's Coach Leroy Rouse who recently obtained his 100th career victory as a basketball coach. This feat was accomplished when the Rebels defeated Brooklyn Cayce last month by a score of 56 to 35.

Octavius Brown Signs with Youngstown State

SPORTS – Former Rebel standout and Shrine Bowl nosegaurd Octavius “Tater” Brown signed his letter of intent to play his final two years of college football at Youngstown State (Youngstown Ohio) on Wednesday December 19 with his former Rebel coaches and mother by his side. Brown (6’0 315 lbs) had 36 tackles and one sack over a span of ten games this past season at Georgia Military College in Milledgeville Ga.

Strom Thurmond Stadium Under Renovation

SPORTS – The Strom Thurmond High School football stadium will be receiving a new facelift and much needed expansion. After much debate and discussions on the topic of bond renewal and distribution of funds, a compromise was struck to split the five million dollars in available funds. Approximately 2.5 million will go to stadium renovations and the other 2.5 million will be applied technology services for the district.

Rebels End Season in Loss to Hartsville 20-10

SPORTS – The Rebels, down 14-10 with 3:45 to play in the game, started their possession at the 47 yard line after a 24 yard kickoff return from Hykeem Brooks.  Darius Hammond broke off a 23 yard run to give the Rebels a first down at the Hartsville 30. Quarterback Jauveer converted a 4th and 1 from the Rebel 21 yard line, taking it to the Hartsville 15 yard line with under 3:00 to play, but that was as close as the Rebels would get to pulling out the comeback.

Playoffs: AAA Lowerstate Title Game, Rebels Host Hartsville

SPORTS – Strom Thurmond (12-1) finds itself in the semi finals for a second straight season and for the 3rd time since 2005. It’s hard to believe but it has been seven years since the Rebels hosted a semi final matchup. In 2005 the Rebels were led by Coco Hillary, who put on a clinic against Dillon in the AAA Lowerstate Title game which Strom won handily 35-7 before going on to capture their second State Title. This is Thurmond’s first season back in 3A after a four year stint in 2A and although the Rebels are one of the smallest AAA schools, they are just one game away from a state title matchup.

Israel Talbert and Trent Miller were nominated as players of the week for their outstanding performance against Hanahan. Rebels Advance to Lower State Championship

SPORTS – The Rebels found themselves in one of the closest contests of the season going into halftime up only 6-3 from two Trent Miller field goals; 23 and 30 yards. The Hawks opened the second half converting a 3rd and 8 from their own twenty yard line on an Anthony Smalls pass to Sammy Richardson that went 80 yards for a touchdown, putting Hanahan up 10-6 with 11:50 to go in the 2nd half.

McKenzie Talbert Signs With Clemson

SPORTS – Strom Thurmond’s McKenzie Talbert was the first player to verbally commit to Clemson’s women's golf program back on September 1, 2011. Now she is one of the first to sign a letter of intent to the Tigers lady golf team which inaugurates in the fall of 2013. On Wednesday in the Strom Thurmond Library, surrounded by family, friends, coaches, administrators and media Talbert signed her intent to play collegiate golf at Clemson University.

SPORTS – The 2012 scoring machine led by Hammond and Hammond is just 47 points shy of the school record 597 single season points. Jauveer has accounted for 34 touchdowns (17 air and 17 ground) while Darius has 21 rushing and one receiving.  The Blue Steel defense is giving up a meager 12 points and 211 yards per game.  Trent Miller has been a fixture in the kicking game by averaging 35 yards per punt and hitting 75-78 point after attempts.

SPORTS – Strom Thurmond will host Marlboro County in round two of the AAA state playoffs this Friday night. The Rebels are 10-1 on the season and riding a 10 game win streak while the Bulldogs enter with a record of 8-3, having won four in a row. After dropping the first game of the season to Eastern Christian Academy, the Rebels have outscored their opponents 485-95.

SPORTS – The Strom Thurmond Rebels completed their ten game regular season in exciting fashion on both sides of the ball.  Offensively averaging 400 yards and 46 points per game, while holding opponents to 200 yards and 11 points per game.  Last week during Senior Night Montel Webb was the offensive player of the game and Kenyatta Dunbar (team leader in tackles) was the defensive player of the game.

SPORTS – For the eighth time in the last nine seasons the Strom Thurmond Rebels are region champions.  This win also gives Rebel head coach Lee Sawyer a school record eight region titles, surpassing Keith McAlister (seven).  The Rebels (9-1) proved dominant on both sides of the ball, routing the resurgent Mustangs (4-6) with big plays while the Blue Steel defense secured its’ first shutout of the season.

SPORTS – The Merriwether Mustangs scored the game winning touchdown with one minute remaining in the fourth quarter to pull out a four point victory over the cross county rival JET Eagles. This action packed game saw six lead changes, some big time plays from future Rebel stars and a female kicker that could split the uprights from 40 yards.

SPORTS – Just a few weeks ago, at the start of region play not many would have imagined this game would have region title implications.  After all Midland Valley came into region play 1-4 with their lone win against 1A Baptist Hill and it appeared they were headed for their second consecutive 1-9 season.But Midland Valley turned things around winning four of their last five games.

Hammond Set to Top 1,000 Yards Rushing

SPORTS – Shrine Bowl running back Darius Hammond enters the regular season finale needing only 15 yards to amass 1000 rushing yards on the season. Hammond is averaging 8.9 yards per carry so there is a good chance it won't take him long to reach this milestone. He has 2,787 career rushing yards, just 213 shy of 3,000 yard mark. As a cohesive offensive unit the Rebels are grinding out 402 yards and 46 points per game. The Blue Steel defense is only allowing 13 points and 199 yards per game.

Thurmond Topples Gilbert 58-14

SPORTS – After giving up 195 yards and 14 points in the first half the Blue Steel defense went into beast mode for the final 24 minutes of play, allowing a total of 30 yards and no points to the Gilbert Indians in the second half.  Bringing a little pressure and adjusting to man coverage was enough to stifle Gilbert quarterback Nick Spires into getting only two first downs and going three and out on four of five second half possessions.

Rebels Tame Swansea 42-7, Sawyer Captures 100th Win

SPORTS – It was prepped as the state’s premiere game this week and was living up to all the hype until 11:29 to play in the 2nd quarter with a score of 7-7 after a Swansea touchdown. That’s when Rebel Shrine Bowl running back Darius Hammond took a handoff and went to his left side behind linemen Montell Webb and Salathian Simpkins, then burst up the field for a 57 yard touchdown run, depleting all momentum Swansea had just gained when they tied the game on the previous play from scrimmage.

SPORTS – Lee Sawyer, a product of Saluda High, began his coaching career at Batesburg-Leesville Middle School in the early 1980’s. Gary Smallen, then head coach at Batesburg-Leesville High hired Sawyer straight out of college. After two years Sawyer made the transition to high school coaching as an assistant under legendary coach Keith McAlister at Strom Thurmond. This came after a few friends playing on their Tidwell Jeweler’s softball team mentioned to Lee, he’d be a good fit as a Rebel and after a phone call from Sawyer’s father to Keith McAlister.

SPORTS – The Strom Thurmond Rebels (5-1) will host the Airport Eagle (3-3) Friday night for Homecoming. This is the second region game of the season. Airport is 0-1 in region play after losing to Swansea 22-0 last week. The Eagle’s average 20 points on offense and give up 20 points per game on defense. Offensively they will show a lot of formations ranging from the power I to the spread.

A Look Around AAA Lower State this Week

SPORTS – It’s hard to believe we’ve crossed the midway point of the regular season, but time flies when you have fun. Teams are beginning to fall into place and things are starting to shape up with just one week of region play down and four remaining.  Hartsville continues to lead all of AAA in scoring by averaging 50 points per outing through their first six games. Strom Thurmond is second in the low state, racking up nearly 46 points per game.  Swansea leads the entire class in defense, allowing a mere 40 points in their first six games with two shutouts.

Hammond and Hammond each break 1000 all-purpose yards just six games into the season

SPORTS – Rebel shot caller Jauveer Hammond broke 1000 all-purpose yards at Brookland-Cayce last week with an air raid and ground pound clinic against the Bearcats.  Hammond has rushed for 451 yards and seven touchdowns, while throwing for 853 yards and ten scores thus far in his junior season.  Under his guidance, the red hot Rebel offense is averaging nearly 46 points per game.  Jauveer now has 1,304 totals yards.

SPORTS – Region play brings out the best in Lee Sawyer’s teams.  As a testament to that, the Rebels are now 39-2 in region play since he took over in 2004.  Friday night would be no exception as the talent laced Rebel offense racked up nearly 600 yards of offense, of which 419 yards and 42 points came before halftime.

SPORTS – The Strom Thurmond Rebels (4-1) will travel to Brookland Cayce to take on the Bearcats (1-4) Friday night for what is the opening region game of the season.
Thurmond has one of the highest scoring offenses in the state, averaging 44 points per game through their first five contests. Defensively the Rebels are allowing 15 points per outing. After dropping the opening game, Thurmond has been wreaking havoc, winning four in a row and outscoring their opponents 184-38.

Around the Lowstate AAA Region

SPORTS – After finishing the pre region schedule, the lowstate looks to be deep and strong with four teams undefeated and six teams enduring only one loss through the first five weeks. The pre region schedule means nothing as the real season starts this week. Every game counts now and could have implications on the playoff seeding. 
Leading the offensive pack is Hartsville. The Red Foxes average nearly 54 points per outing. Defensively, Swansea leads the lower state by only allowing 40 points total in their first five games.

SPORTS – If this were a heavyweight fight, it would have been stopped midway through. Strom Thurmond (4-1) landed combinations of Hammond, Brooks and Hammond at will, while the starting core of the Blue Steel defense allowed only 57 yards and two first downs on the evening. Silver Bluff (4-1) was forced to a three and out on seven of their first ten possessions and lost a fumble on the first play of another one of those possessions.

According to league President, Scott Mims, the squad is young but one of the more talented groups the league has come through the ranks over the past several years. The team is made up primarily of 11 year olds, who over the past two seasons have qualified for the District tournament and posted a record of 9 wins, 7 losses.

SPORTS – Several Wardlaw athletes were recently named to SCISA, Class A, All State teams for the 2012 season. Senior, Katelyn Rearden was honored for her play as a member of the Lady Patriot's softball team. On the year, Rearden would lead the team in all offensive categories. In 18 games she would post a .469 batting average while scoring 30 runs, stealing 22 bases and have 27 RBI's.

SPORTS – After Monday's rebels spring game a banquet followed in the school cafeteria. The 2011 thirteen seniors were presented certificates, patches and a four peat shirt. Coach Sawyer praised his outgoing senior teammates. In the four years they played four regional championships, were accomplished with a 44-8 region record, never loss to Batesburg-Leesville or Saluda, made the quarter-final playoffs each year and outscored opponents 285-38.

Hidden within those banners are seven that represent an accomplishment seldom obtained by any private or public school athletic program. Starting in 2005, the Wardlaw Lady Patriots softball team would begin a run that could only be described as dominating. Seven consecutive state titles in softball. That run came to an end here Saturday afternoon when the Lady Pats would fall to Clarendon Hall in the finals of the SCISA, Class A Softball Championship.

On Tuesday night the Lady Patriots would come from behind in the home half of the final inning to register a thrilling victory. Now, needing only one win to claim the programs eighth straight state title, Wardlaw would lose a heartbreaker to Clarendon Hall in extra innings.

SPORTS – The Rebels captured a number two seed in the District II AA baseball tournament by finishing the season with a 13-3 record including going 8-2 in region play.  They will host #3 seed Buford Thursday night at 6:30. This is a double elimination tournament and the winner of Thurmond/Buford will play the winner of Emerald/Chesnee.  The losers will also play each other with both games being on Saturday.  Thurmond will only have to travel if they play Emerald in the District II tournament.

SPORTS – The Strom Thurmond Fighting Rebels dominated the All Region Standings for Class 2A's Region III.  Thurmond finished the season with a 12-1 record, scored more points than any Rebel team in school history (591) and played great defense throughout the season.  As a reward, 15 players were named to the All Region team including quarterback Raleigh Yeldell as Offensive Player of the year, linebacker Nick Clark as defensive player of the year and Head Coach Lee Sawyer as Coach of the Year.

SPORTS – A sellout crowd gathered at WL Varner Stadium in Woodruff to watch the highly anticipated matchup between two heavyweights from the upstate and they got their money’s worth for 48 total minutes of nonstop action.  In the end, the relentless passing attack of Woodruff Quarterback Ryan Perkins proved to be too much the Rebels as he hit Thurmond with 35 of 51 passes for 393 yards, three touchdowns versus one interception.

SPORTS – When early August rolled around and high school football was getting underway, many experts and prognosticators circled Woodruff and Strom Thurmond to meet in the Upper State Title game, with both possibly being undefeated. At the Clinton jamboree each team walked past the other with only silent stares being passed as Woodruff exited the field from their scrimmage against Laurens and Thurmond entered for their match up with Clinton; both handled their larger opponents on that warm August night. The silent interaction spoke volumes as it appeared there was a sizing-up from each for the potential heavyweight bout to come deep in the playoffs.

SPORTS – When these two met a few weeks ago during region play, Thurmond (10-0) walked away with a 55-8 blowout on Keenan’s field even without star Darrius Hammond suited up. This Friday though, the previous game, each team’s record or even what they’ve done to get to this point will not matter in the sudden death second round of the Class 2A State Playoffs in Johnston. MERRIWETHER – The Fox Creek Lady Predator's volleyball team defeated the North Central Knights in 5 sets on Monday night to move to the Final Four with their win over North Central scoring 18-25, 25-18, 18-25, 25-17, and 15-7. SPORTS – McKenzie Talbert, golfing phenom from Edgefield County, won her third consecutive 3A Individual State Title at Quail Creek Golf Course in Conway S.C. on October 24th&25th. Talbert finished the two day tournament with a 1 over par score of 145 after shooting 72 and 73. Two years ago she set the course record by firing a four under par 68 and then broke her own record last year with a 67, finishing at -6 for the two day tournament in 2010.

SPORTS – A homecoming game couldn’t have been scripted and played out any better in Hollywood than was Strom Thurmond’s annihilation of Eau Claire on the festive Friday night. Darrius Hammond, making his homecoming return, scored three times on his first six carries of the night. SPORTS – Tra’ves Bush, 2009 graduate and former linebacker for the Rebels, now safety for the Navy Midshipmen had a 49 yard interception returned for a touchdown against Western Kentucky on Saturday. SPORTS – Thurmond quarterback Tyree Stidem scored to put the Rebels on the board 6-0 early in the first quarter. This touchdown was set up by an interception. The Trojans came back to take an 8-6 lead early in the 2nd quarter. The lead changed again when Kendall Hill grabbed a Ridge Spring pass and took it 60 yards for a touchdown. This put Thurmond back on top 12-8 with 6:32 to play in the first half.

SPORTS – Strom Thurmond and Columbia continued to win in dominant fashion.  The Rebels flex their muscles on both sides of the ball in the shutout win over Saluda, showing why they are deserving of the high rankings in the state polls.Keenan shut out their second opponent in as many games.Gilbert, Batesburg and Eau Claire still haven’t found the win column.The Panthers were down 35-14 to Mid Carolina and fought back to make a game of it before losing by 7. The Indians jumped out to a 7-0 lead but found themselves down 35-7 at half against White Knoll. Eau Claire wasn’t in the game after the boot met the leather following the coin toss as Flora led 35-0 by the end of the 1st quarter.

SPORTS – After a less than stellar second half last week against Lucy Laney, the Strom Thurmond Rebels traveled to Saluda with something to prove, and they did just that. The Rebels unleashed a flurry of offensive firepower and a hefty dose of lights out Blue Steel defense in their 35-0 win over rival Saluda, with 21 points coming in the second half.  The Blue Steel defense only allowed the potent Saluda offense five first downs and 82 total yards of offense on the night.

SPORTS – The Fighting Rebels have been hitting field for two a day practices in preparing for their 2011 campaign.  Head coach Lee Sawyer (beginning his 7th season as captain of the Rebels) sees a lot of positives for this year’s squad. “Many returning starters on both sides of the ball and a lot of kids that saw substantial playing time over the last few seasons. We have four, three year starters returning and that experience is hard to replace," Sawyer said.

JOHNSTON – The road to a District Championship ended here Wednesday night with the Edgefield Dixie Youth All Stars falling to Laurens 12-2. Edgefield entered the contest with a 3 and 1 tournament record and looking to punch their ticket to the South Carolina Dixie Youth State Tournament. It was a familiar place for Manager Robbie Harter and seven members of his squad who finished second to eventual District 3 Champion Saluda last season.

JOHNSTON – For the second year in a row the Edgefield Dixie Youth Major League All Stars will compete for the District 3 Championship after a thrilling 6-5, come from behind win over Clinton. After being dominated by the Clinton team on Monday night, Manager Robbie Harter knew his team would have to overcome not only the Clinton pitching staff but the memories of a 15-3 loss as well. "Our coaching staff really challenged the team to come here tonight and show Clinton what type of team Edgefield really is."

JOHNSTON – The Edgefield Major League All Stars suffered their first defeat of the District 3 Tournament here Monday night, dropping a 15-4 decision to Clinton. This would mark the second meeting of the tournament for the two teams, with Edgefield taking a 4-3 win in the initial contest. Now, three teams have one loss each in the double elimination tournament.

JOHNSTON – The Edgefield Major League All Star team got things started with a victory here Friday in a thrilling 4-3 win over Clinton. Playing in the first game of the District 3 Tournament, Edgefield would send Kashawn Johnson to the mound for the start. The 12 year old right hander would not disappoint, pitching 3 innings, allowing only 1 hit while walking 3 and striking out 8.

COUNTY – The 2011 Tournament season came to an end here Tuesday night for the Edgefield Minor League All Stars after losing to Abbeville, 9-0 in the semi-finals. The team, made up of 9 and 10 year olds finished their All Star run with victories over Johnston, Batesburg-Leesville, Ridge Spring and Iva, with their only losses being registered to Mid Carolina and Abbeville, who will now compete for the District 3 Championship.

BATESBURG  – For the second year in a row the Edgefield Dixie Youth Minor League All Stars have qualified to compete in the District 3 Tournament.  The team captured 2nd place in the Sub-District Tournament which was held in Batesburg with wins over Johnston, Batesburg-Leesville and Ridge Springs.  The team finished with a 9-1 victory over the Ridge Spring-Monetta All Stars on Tuesday night.  Once again, Edgefield would use dominating pitching, a stingy defense and offensive power at the plate to secure the win.

BATESBURG – The Edgefield Minor League All Stars suffered their first loss of the Sub-District Tournament Sunday afternoon, falling to Mid Carolina by a score of 6-1. Edgefield pitcher Peyton Smith would run into trouble in the 3rd inning, walking 3 Mid Carolina batters before being relieved by 9 year old Michael Feagin. Feagin would finish out the inning but not before Mid Carolina would push 3 runs across the plate.

BATESBURG-LEESVILLE – The Edgefield Dixie Youth Minor League All Stars shut out Johnston 7-0 Saturday night behind a no hit performance from William Prince. On the night the 10 year old right- hander would face 25 batters, striking out 13. On defense, Edgefield would play perfect baseball by not comitting a single error.

JOHNSTON – The Strom Thurmond baseball team fell out of the AA State Playoffs Wednesday night when they lost back to back games to the Palmetto Mustangs at home. In game one, Thurmond pitcher Alex Cheatham held Palmetto scoreless for the first two innings, but the Mustangs put together four runs in the 3rd and 6th, to take an insurmountable lead on the Rebels.

SPORTS – The Strom Thurmond Rebel baseball team continued their march toward a state title with two key victories over the weekend. They knocked off Cheraw 7-2 and then went to Williamston SC to play #3 in the state Palmetto High. After a convincing 13-9 win over the Mustangs, Thurmond earned a home field playoff game and a rematch with either Cheraw or Palmetto, in this double elimination tournament.

Thurmond Grad Helping to Lead NC Team in College Finals
ASHEVILLE, N.C. – Kotie Kimble is living a dream, and in it he is dancing. But he’s hardly doing so alone. He has plenty of company – the entire men’s basketball team at the University of North Carolina-Asheville. Kimble, a 2003 graduate of Strom Thurmond High School and former manager with the Rebels basketball team, took his love of the game to Coastal Carolina in Conway, S.C. where he served two Chanticleer head coaches as an undergraduate assistant. And Kimble nearly danced with them in 2006, but the Chants fell short.

"That wasn't that big because it wasn't face to face," Williams told Tigerillustrated.com Saturday afternoon. "But it's a big SEC school." Official offer No. 2 was delivered in person from head coach Dabo Swinney on Saturday as part of Clemson's Junior Day. Strom Thurmond’s Brown and Sawyer Shine at Shrine Bowl; Sandlappers Win 42-10

SPORTS – Strom Thurmond standout Octavius Brown heavily contributed to the South Carolina Shrine Bowl team’s total defensive dominance in a 42-10 annihilation of the North Carolina Tar Heel team.  Brown started at nose guard for the Sandlappers and had three hurries, was in on three additional tackles and one sack.  Octavius also helped force one fumble during a goal line stance at the 8:57 mark of the 2nd quarter, all while being doubled teamed most of the day.

Offensive lineman Matt Holmes and safety Ron Parker earned first team all-region honors, and are now eligible for All-American honors later this month.
