SPORTS – The difficulty of winning one state championship is challenging; let alone multiple ones. So many things have to go right in order for a program to accomplish the goal that every single high school set at the beginning of the year. A team must avoid serious injuries, work hard during off-season, develop effective game plans each week that plays to their advantage, stay focused throughout the season, among other things. It doesn’t hurt to have some luck on your side from time to time. Welvin Simpkins has been very fortunate to be apart of programs that has accomplish that goal of winning state.

SPORTS – After their first complete season, the Edgefield Monarchs, under the direction of Coach Wilbur Gordon, had three of their players try out for the Paine College baseball team. The players are (left to right) Rickey Thomas Jr., Mel Jackson, and Tay Butler, pictured with Coach Gordon. The tryouts were conducted from 9 am to 5 pm at Paine College field on Saturday, December 17th.

Strom Thurmond Dominates in All Region Recognitions

SPORTS – The Strom Thurmond Fighting Rebels dominated the All Region Standings for Class 2A's Region III.  Thurmond finished the season with a 12-1 record, scored more points than any Rebel team in school history (591) and played great defense throughout the season.  As a reward, 15 players were named to the All Region team including quarterback Raleigh Yeldell as Offensive Player of the year, linebacker Nick Clark as defensive player of the year and Head Coach Lee Sawyer as Coach of the Year.

Rebels End Season 12-1

SPORTS – A sellout crowd gathered at WL Varner Stadium in Woodruff to watch the highly anticipated matchup between two heavyweights from the upstate and they got their money’s worth for 48 total minutes of nonstop action.  In the end, the relentless passing attack of Woodruff Quarterback Ryan Perkins proved to be too much the Rebels as he hit Thurmond with 35 of 51 passes for 393 yards, three touchdowns versus one interception.

SPORTS – When early August rolled around and high school football was getting underway, many experts and prognosticators circled Woodruff and Strom Thurmond to meet in the Upper State Title game, with both possibly being undefeated. At the Clinton jamboree each team walked past the other with only silent stares being passed as Woodruff exited the field from their scrimmage against Laurens and Thurmond entered for their match up with Clinton; both handled their larger opponents on that warm August night. The silent interaction spoke volumes as it appeared there was a sizing-up from each for the potential heavyweight bout to come deep in the playoffs.

SPORTS – The high scoring offense and lights out Blue Steel defense has led the 2011 Strom Thurmond Rebels to the 2A Upperstate Title game. Versatile quarterback
 Raleigh Yeldell has contributed total of 29 touchdowns and over 2300 yards to the offense.  Defensively, James Bates (9 sacks), Hykeem Brooks (4 interceptions and Nick Clark (99 tackles) lead the Rebels. Jamal Jackson, Demetrius Leysath and Aaron Cook all have 2 interceptions each, on the stingy defense.

Rebels Advance to UpperState Title Game, Rout Emerald 49-21

SPORTS – After four consecutive years of not advancing out of the third round, Strom Thurmond made up for years of frustration in their 49-21 victory Friday night.  The victim was a resurgent Emerald Viking team that had played turnover free football and scored 40+ points in their first two playoff games.  Their Cinderella story came to a crashing halt at the hands of a fired up Blue Steel defense and a high powered Rowdy Rebel offense on a cold night in Johnston.

Playoffs Round 3, Emerald at Strom Thurmond: Winner Advances to Upper-State Title Game

SPORTS – The Emerald Vikings are 7-5 on the season and have won three of their last four games. They will roll into Johnston with a second consecutive upset on their mind this week. In the second round, Emerald as #6 seed defeated #3 Pendleton with a convincing 48-26 drubbing of the Bulldogs in the second half.  The Vikings only led 21-17 at half before they opened things up on the top finisher from region one in the final two quarters.

SPORTS – As the Rebels prepare for the 3rd round of the playoffs they have totaled over 4100 yards of offense while holding opponents to less than 2000 on the season, thru the first eleven games. Senior quarterback Raleigh Yeldell is 78-116-1424 yards 17 touchdowns and 4 interceptions passing, while talleying 745 yards and 9 touchdowns on 77 carries rushing. Malcolm Watkins is leading the way rushing with 824 yards on 117 carries and 14 touchdowns. The kicking game has been stellar with Trent "Miller Time" Miller nailing 70-71 point after attempts.

SPORTS – An opening drive by the Raiders that went 78 yards in 20 plays while eating 11:37 off the 1st quarter clock brought uneasiness to the home team and crowd. It appeared the bye week had rusted the once powerful Blue Steel defense as Keenan converted two 4th downs and multiple 3rd downs all while milking the play clock on each snap.

SPORTS – When these two met a few weeks ago during region play, Thurmond (10-0) walked away with a 55-8 blowout on Keenan’s field even without star Darrius Hammond suited up. This Friday though, the previous game, each team’s record or even what they’ve done to get to this point will not matter in the sudden death second round of the Class 2A State Playoffs in Johnston. All teams are equal at this point and it only takes one win to move on or one loss for basketball season to start.

Two Rebels Make North-South All Star Game

SPORTS – Strom Thurmond senior quarterback Raleigh Yeldell (Left) and senior offensive lineman Chris Herrin have been selected to the South Carolina Automobile Dealers Association North-South All Star game. The game, which pits the top upstate players from all classifications against the top lower-state players from across all classifications, will be held to be held at Doug Shaw Memorial Stadium, in Myrtle Beach, on Saturday December 10.

Lady Predator's Move to Final Four in Tournament Play

MERRIWETHER – The Fox Creek Lady Predator's volleyball team defeated the North Central Knights in 5 sets on Monday night to move to the Final Four with their win over North Central scoring 18-25, 25-18, 18-25, 25-17, and 15-7. The Predator's are now 24-4 on the regular season and 30-4 including tournament play. The Lady Predators have made school history by earning a first time ever appearance in the state semi-finals.

SPORTS – Regular season mission accomplished. The record scoring Rowdy Rebels capped off a perfect 10-0 regular season with a rout of Batesburg Leesville in the Panther Pit, becoming only the eighth team in Thurmond history to finish a regular season without a loss. Although seven prior teams finished the regular season unbeaten, none of them averaged 47 points per game like the 2011 Rebels.

Talbert Three-Peats at 3A State Golf Tournament

SPORTS – McKenzie Talbert, golfing phenom from Edgefield County, won her third consecutive 3A Individual State Title at Quail Creek Golf Course in Conway S.C. on October 24th&25th. Talbert finished the two day tournament with a 1 over par score of 145 after shooting 72 and 73. Two years ago she set the course record by firing a four under par 68 and then broke her own record last year with a 67, finishing at -6 for the two day tournament in 2010.

JV Rebels Rout Batesburg, Finish Season Undefeated

SPORTS – The young Rebels completed a perfect 9-0 season with blowout 35-7 win over rival Batesburg Leesville. After holding Batesburg out of the endzone, the offense took the field for the first time and marched 90 yards, scoring on a 7 yard Deleonta Bates run.  Cole Fell, little brother to former Rebel standout Ren Fell, split the uprights giving Strom a 7-0 lead with 3:17 in the opening quarter.

SPORTS – The Fighting Rebels will take the highway 23 ride to Batesburg Friday looking to finish the regular season with a 10-0 record.  They are currently 9-0, on a record scoring pace of 46 points per game and could become just the eighth team in school history to finish the regular season without a loss by beating Batesburg this week.

JET Middle Schools Prevails in Showdown over Merriwether

SPORTS – The JET Eagles finished the season with a thrilling 40-22 win over Merriwether Wednesday night.  Sanchez Singleton put the Eagles on the board by going 51 yards to pay dirt on his first touch of the evening. Keeley Marchant cut the lead 6-3 when she connected a field goal with 5:57 to play in the first quarter for the Mustangs.

SPORTS – The Rebels are on record pace offensively, averaging 46 points per game and have scored 416 total points thus far. The most points scored in a season by a Strom Thurmond team is 510 by the 1996 squad that averaged 36 points per game.  This has been a season of records for the Rebels and they still have a lot of football left to play as they march towards their ultimate goal of a state championship.

SPORTS – For the seventh time in eight years the Strom Thurmond Rebels are regions champs. It was a Senior Night to remember as the state’s #2 ranked Rebels came out firing on all cylinders and blew Gilbert away in record fashion scoring the most points in school history. Not only did the offense light it up but the defense blanketed Gilbert. Of the Indian’s 12 possessions the Blue Steel defense forced seven 3 and outs and two turnovers.

SPORTS – Strom Thurmond will put their unblemished 8-0 record on the line Friday night when the 3-5 Gilbert Indians come to Johnston.  A win would give Thurmond its 7th region title in the previous eight seasons but more importantly the Rebels would earn a first round bye in the playoffs. Under the new system in 2A, all region champs get a first round bye this season.

MERRIWETHER – The Predators Varsity Volleyball team defeated the Trojans in the first match of a double header 25-11 and 25-17. The Predators then finished their undefeated region play by winning the second match 25-14 and 25-12. Fox Creek is now 21-4 on the season and 16-0 in region play.

AIKEN – On a night better suited for football than baseball, the Edgefield Xtreme would notch win number six of the CSRA Fall League season Wednesday night with a 8-4 victory over the Aiken Revenge. Edgefield would start the scoring in the top half of the first inning when Hunter Cadiere would single with two outs and quickly steal two bases to arrive at 3rd.

SPORTS – Jared Bass continued his assault on opposing pitchers Monday night, going 2 for 2 at the plate as the Edgefield Xtreme captured the second seed in the upcoming CSRA League Tournament slated to begin next week in Aiken. In addition to his two base hits, Bass would steal 4 bases while scoring 2 runs for Edgefield. As if that wasn't enough, Bass would also start on the mound and pitch 2 innings. On the night the 12 year old would face 12 batters, allowing 2 hits and 1 run while walking 1 and striking out 3.

SPORTS – A homecoming game couldn’t have been scripted and played out any better in Hollywood than was Strom Thurmond’s annihilation of Eau Claire on the festive Friday night. Darrius Hammond, making his homecoming return, scored three times on his first six carries of the night. The Blue Steel defense held Eau Claire to negative yards and no first downs on their six possessions and the Rebels scored every time they had the ball except their last possession when time expired to end the first half.

SPORTS – The young Rebels improved to 6-0 on the season with a 28-0 shutout over Keenan Thursday night. Travonte Watkins scored twice, Deleonta Bates scored once and Isreal Talbert broke off a 35 yard run which set up a Terrell Rhynes 10 yard touchdown run. Terrance Graham grabbed an interception with 1:48 to play in the 3rd quarter to stop a potential Keenan score and assure a Rebel shutout.

SPORTS – This is something that started 51 years ago under coaching legend Bettis Herlong and was accomplished by his Cousin and former player Lee Sawyer.  The rich tradition that is Strom Thurmond football just got a little richer on Friday night as the Fighting Rebels secured their 400th win in school history in spectacular fashion over Class 2A rival and powerhouse Silver Bluff, routing the Bulldogs 52-7.

SPORTS – Facing the largest school on the schedule and a sure nemesis throughout its history, Strom Thurmond got off the buses in South Aiken ready to make a statement.  A win over a good 4A South Aiken team would have given the Rebels a lot of confidence going into next week’s showdown with fellow class 2A power Silver Bluff. Especially considering Silver Bluff beat South Aiken last week 15-12.  But what the Rebels got was a dominating performance on both sides of the ball that sent a message to the remaining schedule: This Strom Thurmond team is for real.

SPORTS – Tra’ves Bush, 2009 graduate and former linebacker for the Rebels, now safety for the Navy Midshipmen had a 49 yard interception returned for a touchdown against Western Kentucky on Saturday. Navy won 40-14 and improved to 2-0 on the season. The 5”10 192lb Bush is now a junior at Navy and will make his way back to South Carolina this week as the Midshipmen travel to Columbia to battle the Gamecocks.

SPORTS – It was a horrendous week for Region III 2A football with no wins being recorded for the conference.  Thurmond, Columbia and Keenan have winning records while Batesburg, Gilbert and Eau Claire are a combined 0-10 to this point.  The big boys of the region will be back on the field this week as Thurmond and Columbia have now completed their bye weeks for the season.

SPORTS – Thurmond quarterback Tyree Stidem scored to put the Rebels on the board 6-0 early in the first quarter. This touchdown was set up by an interception. The Trojans came back to take an 8-6 lead early in the 2nd quarter. The lead changed again when Kendall Hill grabbed a Ridge Spring pass and took it 60 yards for a touchdown. This put Thurmond back on top 12-8 with 6:32 to play in the first half.

SPORTS – Strom Thurmond and Columbia continued to win in dominant fashion.  The Rebels flex their muscles on both sides of the ball in the shutout win over Saluda, showing why they are deserving of the high rankings in the state polls.Keenan shut out their second opponent in as many games.Gilbert, Batesburg and Eau Claire still haven’t found the win column.The Panthers were down 35-14 to Mid Carolina and fought back to make a game of it before losing by 7. SPORTS – After a less than stellar second half last week against Lucy Laney, the Strom Thurmond Rebels traveled to Saluda with something to prove, and they did just that. The Rebels unleashed a flurry of offensive firepower and a hefty dose of lights out Blue Steel defense in their 35-0 win over rival Saluda, with 21 points coming in the second half.  The Blue Steel defense only allowed the potent Saluda offense five first downs and 82 total yards of offense on the night.

He has plenty of company – the entire men’s basketball team at the University of North Carolina-Asheville. SPORTS – Strom Thurmond standout Octavius Brown heavily contributed to the South Carolina Shrine Bowl team’s total defensive dominance in a 42-10 annihilation of the North Carolina Tar Heel team.  Brown started at nose guard for the Sandlappers and had three hurries, was in on three additional tackles and one sack.  Octavius also helped force one fumble during a goal line stance at the 8:57 mark of the 2nd quarter, all while being doubled teamed most of the day.

SPORTS – The undefeated Central Eagles (12-0) will put their perfect season on the line when they take on Thurmond (10-2) Friday night in the semifinals of the AA playoffs. Central has defeated Thurmond the past two seasons by five points then went on to destroy their fourth round opponent by an average margin of 31 points, on the way to the state championship game.  But Dillon has been their nemesis as the Wildcats defeated the Eagles in 2008 and 2009, by 1 point each game, to claim the AA crown.  Central is the #1 seed from Region IV and Thurmond is the #1 seed from Region III.

SPORTS – Batesburg-Leesville beat Eau Claire 38-18 to remain in first place of Region III.  Columbia blew out Gilbert 36-3.  Thurmond got back to Rebel football with a 35-7 victory over Keenan. Strom Thurmond’s Blue Steel defense is tops in the region, only allowing 10 points per game.

Saturday Sports: Rebels Rout Raiders 35-7

SPORTS – Homecoming night opened with a 1st quarter for the record books.  A twelve minute quarter took 44 minutes of real time and saw a combined 12 penalties, 3 turnovers, 2 official timeouts and the scoreboard shut down.  But the Rebels found their way through the adversity and back on track as they jumped to a 21-0 lead after the extended 1st quarter of play.

SPORTS – Batesburg-Leesville beat Gilbert 30-9 which kept the Indians winless on the season. Columbia held off Thurmond 18-13, giving the Rebels their second consecutive loss. Eau Claire routed Keenan 35-6 to push the Raider’s losing streak to five games.

Columbia Captures Win Over Thurmond

SPORTS – Columbia shocked the Rebels 18-13, handing Strom only their second region loss in the last 6 years, at Bolden Stadium on Thursday night. The Capitals came out of the gate and set the tone for the evening when they drove 67 yards in 8 plays on the game’s opening possession.  The Rebels blocked the extra point attempt to hold Columbia’s lead 6-0 with 8:33 remaining in the first.

SPORTS – It’s hard to believe we’ve arrived to the midway point of the regular season.  Soon, the record breaking Summer heat will succumb to cool Autumn temperatures as region play heats up.  All teams are even after five pre-region tuneup games.  Prior performances have no bearing on the race for the playoffs, which begin this week.  Six teams will be vying for only four playoff spots.

SPORTS – Statistics for Strom Thurmond continue to mount as the Rebels moved to 4-0 for the season and they look forward to hosting Silver Bluff at home this Friday night. So far the Rebels have recorded 1,178 yards of offense averaging nearly 300 yards per game as well as 27.5 points per game with 5.3 points attributed to the defense per game.

SPORTS – Columbia High continued their offensive dominance with a 48-6 demolishing of Brookland Cayce.  Thurmond routed South Aiken 42-7, which gave the Rebels their 3rd straight 35 point win over the Thoroughbreds. Eau Claire fell to previous winless Lower Richland 21-7, to finish off the pre region schedule.

SPORTS – The night’s opening drive became indicative of how the Rebels would ride the Thoroughbreds out of town.  Thurmond steered 68 yards in 7 plays with a balance of 3 passes and 4 runs, capped off by Chris Blocker trotting 12 yards for a touchdown.  Trent Miller hurdled the uprights and Thurmond led 7-0 just 2:51 into the game.

SPORTS – The Saluda-Thurmond series has been a special rivalry for so many years due to the schools close proximity and the relationships of both communities.  Most players, on each team, have family and/or friends on the other side of the field.  This game is about pride; family, school and community pride when these two teams meet up on the gridiron. The following article features a father and son combination in which the father played for Saluda and the son for Strom Thurmond. Columbia lost to AC Flora 33-32 but leads the region in points scored and Eau Claire picked up their first win of the season over CA Johnson 19-0, in a game that was called at halftime due to inclement weather.

SPORTS – One packed house, one electric atmosphere and six turnovers told the story of Strom Thurmond pulling away from Laney in the waning moments of Friday night’s football game, 20-7.The Blue Steel defense continued to silence the critics and shutdown opponents, while grabbing their 7th interception and 2nd fumble in just two games.  They also proved the Williston shutout was no fluke but instead great defense.

SPORTS – With only 3:03 remaining in a 7-0 game, Williston had just driven 53 yards in seven plays to Strom’s 20 yard line. On 3rd and five, after a Blue Devil timeout, Williston quarterback Tamyn Garrick throws to the corner of the endzone toward highly touted Mr. Everything Dexter Staley.  But Blue Steel defensive back Cody Johnson went up and took the ball from Staley, ensuring a shutout and a Strom Thurmond victory.

ROCK HILL – Newberry College leads the way on the 2010 Preseason All-South Atlantic Conference football team, which was released by the league office today. The Wolves have a conference-best 10 selections, with three players on the first team and seven on the second team. The Wolves are predicted to finish fourth in conference play according to the annual coaches' poll, which was also released on Thursday. Among the 10 standouts is Johnston resident Matt Holmes.

JOHNSTON – For the third time in five years Strom Thurmond will be losing an offensive coordinator.  Chad Leaphart has accepted the head coaching position at Swansea High School.  Leaphart, who has been an assistant football coach at Strom Thurmond since 2000, says this is what all assistants strive for. He hates to leave STHS, but is excited about the opportunity of running his own team.

Rebels have “All-State” punter in Rhoden

JOHNSTON – The Strom Thurmond Rebels will be gearing up for next year’s football season before you know it, and one thing they can count on is the return of Cullen Rhoden as punter. Rhoden was recently named as a First All-State player for 2009 by The State newspaper. As a sophomore, Rhoden averaged 41.3 yards a punt with 42 punts on the year.
