Rebels roll to 73-44 win over Chapin

web posted January 7, 2008
JOHNSTON – Strom Thurmond jumped out to a double figure lead in the first quarter and cruised to a 73-44 win over Chapin in the region opener for both teams Friday night. The Rebels improved to 5-6 overall with the win while Chapin fell to 4-12 with the loss.

Strom Thurmond opened things up by scoring the first nine points of the game. A lay up and 3-pointer from Justin Smith preceded putbacks from Sam Broadwater and Leroy Gilchrist. Twelve of Gilchrist's game-high 20 points would in fact come from putbacks of offensive rebounds.

Strom Thurmond's rebounding dominance was such that the Chapin head coach could be heard telling his bench in the fourth quarter, "We're gonna box out for two and a half hours Monday (at practice). That's all we're gonna do."

Strom Thurmond's lead grew to 13-2 before a 6-0 Chapin spurt briefly cut into it.
The Rebels started to blow the game open with a 14-2 run in the second quarter. That run put the Rebels up 32-10 with 4:41 left in the first half. In addition to Smith and Gilchrist, guard Andre Brooks contributed a lay up and 3-pointer to the run. Rebels' head coach Bo Rouse was able to substitute liberally and the bench contributed heavily to the win.

Chapin cut the lead to 19, at 40-21 on an inside basket by Bobby Brown. Strom Thurmond's Tra' ves Bush came back with a basket to put the Rebels up 42-21 at the end of the half.

The second half was a repeat performance with the Rebels scoring inside and the lead continuing to grow. The high point of the third quarter came when Gilchrist caught an inbound pass for a one-hand slam dunk to make the score 56-28 at the 1:41 mark.
Chapin pulled within 59-39 on a Danny Fisler 3-pointer in the fourth quarter, but would come no closer.

The final score indicated dominance, but Rouse was only moderately pleased.
"For us to win the region, we have to play a whole lot better on defense," Rouse said.
Strom Thurmond is back at home this Friday night.
