Chapin edges Lady Rebels 58-56 in Region Opener
web
posted January 7, 2008
JOHNSTON – Chapin's Lady Eagles rallied
from a big fourth quarter deficit to edge Strom Thurmond 58-56 Friday
night. Strom Thurmond turned a one-point lead at the end of the first
quarter to a 29-17 edge at the end of the first half. The lead could
have been bigger, but the Lady Rebels missed 8 of 15 opportunities from
the free throw line.
Strom Thurmond kept Chapin at bay in the third quarter. The Lady Eagles
pulled within 34-26 on a lay up by Layla Neal, but an 8-2 spurt put
Strom Thurmond up again by double figures. The last four points came
after consecutive steals and lay ups by Lady Rebel guard Courtney
Mealing.
A pull up jumper by Kelli Carr and 3-pointer by Kelly Coker helped
Chapin cut Strom Thurmond's 10-point lead in half to open the fourth
quarter. A baseline jumper by Amanda Parks and lay up by Mealing
stretched the lead back to 48-39 with 5:53 left in the contest, but
Chapin had one final rally before it was over.
Coker's second 3-pointer of the quarter and four points from Grace Kemp
pulled Chapin to within 50-48 with just over two minutes left in the
game. Alexsus Houston hit a free throw for Strom Thurmond, but Chapin
came back to cut the lead to a single point.
Back to back 3-pointers from Coker gave Chapin a 56-55 lead with 1:05
left in the game. The Lady Eagles had not been in front since a pair of
free throws gave them a 12-11 lead in the opening moments of the second
quarter. The Lady Rebels missed a chance at the go-ahead basket in the
closing seconds.
After several seconds had elapsed, a Chapin player went to the line and
made two free throws. Strom Thurmond's Gina Easler made a free throw
with less than a second left, but the Lady Rebels could not gather the
rebound and score to tie the game.
Chapin improved to 12-3 overall and 1-0 in Region 4-AAA with the win
while the Lady Rebels fell to 6-8 overall and 0-1 with the loss.
