Rebels have “All-State” punter in Rhoden
web
posted January 7, 2010
JOHNSTON – The Strom Thurmond Rebels will
be gearing up for next year’s football season before you know it, and
one thing they can count on is the return of Cullen Rhoden as punter.
Rhoden was recently named as a First All-State player for 2009 by The
State newspaper. As a sophomore, Rhoden averaged 41.3 yards a punt with
42 punts on the year.
Unlike most punters, Rhoden also takes double duty as a linebacker for
the defense.
Cullen is the son of Donald Rhoden of Johnston, who said he was very
proud of his son making the All-State list. Likewise, his grandparents,
Ray and JoAnn Rhoden, also of Johnston, express similar glowing
acclaims for their grandson.
Rhoden hopes to attend the University of Georgia after graduating, but
for now he has his sights set on helping the Rebels in their quest for
another state championship.
The Rebels fished the year with a defeat by Central Pageland in the
quarterfinals of the play-offs and ended the season as Region Champs
and boasting a 10-3 record.
In last six seasons of Strom Thurmond, the Rebels have won 5 region
titles, 1 state title, four 10-plus win seasons, and have an overall
record of 62-16.
