STH and Wardlaw Basketball Sports Recap

web posted January 14, 2008
JOHNSTON – Strom Thurmond Rebels knocked the Airport Eagles from the ranks of the unbeaten in Region 4-AAA with an 83-73 win on Friday night. The Rebels improved to 6-9 overall and 2-1 in the region while Airport drops to the identical record with the loss.

Nine players from each team scored before the game was over, but the Rebels got bigger nights from two individuals. Justin Smith led everyone with a game-high 29 points while Leroy Gilchrist added 21 for Strom Thurmond. Joe Cook was the next Rebel to approach double figures with eight points.

Jordan Graham's 20 points led four Airport players in double figures. Josh Gordon finished with 16 while Sting William added 13 and Johnathan Jackson 11 points.
Brookland-Cayce improved to 13-1 overall with their 71-59 home win over the Rebels this past Tuesday.

Strom Thurmond had to play from behind for the majority of the game. They did cut a 14-point Bearcat lead down to three in the late stages of the game, but could never eventually take the lead.

The Bearcats also had four in double figures led by 22 from Delanta McCoy and 18 from T. J. Boykin.

Smith had 17 in a losing cause to lead the Rebels. Gilchrist and Andre Brooks added 14 apiece.

Strom Thurmond's next opponent, Swansea, defeated Midland Valley by eight in their most recent game on Friday night.

The Lady Rebels suffered their first loss in Region 4-AAA play this week when they fell 51-42 at home against Airport Friday night after posting a 61-43 victory at Brookland-Cayce on Tuesday.

Airport's Lady Eagles had too many options on offense, and they managed to keep Strom Thurmond's leading scorer, Courtney Mealing, under 30 for one of the few games in recent memory.

Airport was led by Leanna Richardson who finished with 13 points. Teamates Jana Eichelberger and Taniqua Canzater added 12 apiece with Jessica Ellison adding 11 points to the offensive attack.

Mealing had a game-high 18 points for the Lady Rebels with Gina Easler and Alexsus Houston adding 11 each. Junicia Lee accounted for the other two Strom Thurmond points in the contest. The Lady Rebels dropped to 7-9 overall and 2-1 in region play with the loss.

In the Brookland-Cayce game both teams struggled early to the point of a 17-17 tie at halftime. The Lady Rebels surpassed their entire first half output with a 19-point third quarter while Brookland-Cayce almost did the same with a 14-point quarter of their own.
Strom Thurmond found even more success on offense in fourth quarter by putting up 25 points.

Mealing led all players with 36 points while Houston added 12 for the Lady Rebels. Brookland-Cayce was led by Asia Bernard and Taylor Vinson who scored 14 and 13 respectively.

The Lady Rebels are back on the court Tuesday when they travel to meet Swansea. Swansea will go into the game on the strength of their 10-point win over Midland Valley on Friday night.

Wardlaw Academy
The Wardlaw Academy girls remained unbeaten on the basketball season with a dominating 61-4 road win at Aiken Prep on Friday. The Lady Patriots improved to 11-0 with the victory while the loss kept Aiken Prep winless at 0-11.

The tandem of guards Elizabeth Stone and Kristina Graves did the job again for the Lady Patriots. Stone led everyone with 34 points while Graves added 12 points. Wardlaw also picked up nine points from Anna Yarborough in the victory.

Two players had baskets to account for the Aiken Prep points.
The Wardlaw boys made the night a complete success by defeating Aiken Prep by a score of 43-35.

Guards Justin Ouzts and Stephen Balentine had 12 and 10 points respectively to help Wardlaw improve to 7-4 on the season. Will McMercury, with 11, was the only Aiken Prep player in double figures. Aiken Prep fell to 1-10 on the season with the loss.
