web
posted January 21, 2008
SPORTS – The Strom Thurmond High boys'
basketball team remained in the hunt for a Region 4-AAA championship by
picking up a pair of road wins this week. The Rebels began by edging
Swansea 64-61 on Tuesday and closed the week with a convincing 65-44
victory at rival Midland Valley on Friday.
Strom Thurmond had to withstand a late charge to down the Swansea
Tigers. The Rebels led 15-11 at the end of the first and Swansea was
only down 33-29 at the end of the first half.
Good defense combined with a lull on offense by Swansea allowed the
Rebels to stretch their lead to 46-38 after three quarters. Swansea
found rhythm to put up 23 points in the fourth quarter, but the Rebels
were able to hold on for the victory.
Justin Smith led the way for Strom Thurmond with 19 points including a
trio of 3-pointers. Power forward Leroy Gilchrist added 18 points for
the Rebels who improved to 3-1 in region play with the victory.Trent
Green had a game-high 22 points to lead Swansea while teammate Kyndon
Smith added 17 with four 3-pointers.
The Rebels continued to expand on a six-point lead at the end of the
first quarter against Midland Valley.
The lead grew to 31-20 at the end of the first half and 42-29 after
three quarters. Head coach Bo Rouse got good production from the entire
team as 10 Strom Thurmond players scored in the game. The team was led
by Smith who had 18 and Gilchrist who finished with 15 points.
Strom Thurmond improved to 8-9 overall and 4-1 in region play with the
victory.
Niko Hatcher was the only Midland Valley player in double figures with
18 points as well.
For their next game on Tuesday, the Rebels step away from region
competition to face Greenbrier High in Georgia. In their most recent
game on Friday, Greenbrier edged Lakeside High 46-41.
The Lady Rebels of Strom Thurmond used a special night from a star
player to pick up one of their two wins in Region 4-AAA play this week.
Junior guard Courtney Mealing tossed in a career-high 48 points to help
Strom Thurmond to a 68-62 win at Swansea on Tuesday. The Lady Rebels
closed the week with a 62-38 win at Midland Valley on Friday.
Having played on the varsity squad since seventh grade, Mealing is
rising among the school's all-time scoring leaders. Mealing was so
dominant in the Swansea game that she scored 17 of the team's 20 points
in the first quarter and added 20 of the team's 25 in the fourth
quarter. Before the Swansea outburst, Mealing has had a series of
30-point games this season.
