Patriots attack with big wins against Long Cane
web
posted January 21, 2008
SPORTS – The Wardlaw Academy basketball
teams continued their respective successful seasons with road wins at
Long Cane on Friday night. The Lady Patriots posted a commanding win
with a 48-21 final score while the varsity boys rolled to a 46-34
victory. The Lady Patriots took control early in the contest going up
11-2 at the end of the first quarter and built a 27-6 lead by the end
of the first half.
Wardlaw continued to dominate Long Cane outscoring them 31-15 in the
second half. Long Cane finished the contest with just nine field goals
and did not score double figures for a single quarter of the game. They
came close with a nine-point fourth quarter.
Wardlaw's Elizabeth Stone led all players with 20 points while teammate
Kristina Graves added 16. Amber Bussey had 11 in a losing cause for
Long Cane.
In boys game Long Cane had to play from behind again as the Patriots
raced out to a 16-2 lead at the end of the first quarter. Long Cane's
offensive struggles put them into an even bigger hole as they went
scoreless in the second quarter and the Patriots expanded their lead to
expand to 31-2.
Long Cane had a 13-12 scoring edge in the third quarter, but the first
half deficit was too much for them to overcome. Wardlaw only scored
three points in the fourth quarter, but Long Cane's 19 was not enough
to make up the deficit.
Travis Gagnon and Justin Ouzts led the way for Wardlaw with 13 and 12
points respectively. Long Cane's Kai Jenia tied for the top honors with
13 points.
