Rebels Coach Lee Sawyer will stay at STH
web
posted January 24, 2009
JOHNSTON – Coach Lee Sawyer put an end to
any rumors that he was considering leaving Strom Thurmond to fill the
shoes of Greenwood coach Shell Dula who announced in December that he
was retiring after 12 years as Greenwood’s head football coach. Coach
Sawyer was thought to be the top pick for the job after being a former
defensive coordinator under Dula for three years. “I would like to
announce that I am not pursuing the Greenwood High School job or any
other job that I may be rumored to take,” Sawyer said at a press
conference at Strom Thurmond Friday morning.
“During the past month, I have conferred with several close friends and
colleagues about the possibility of leaving Strom Thurmond for
Greenwood. I have spent many hours alone studying the pros and cons of
such a move,” Sawyer said. And to assuage any intentions of every
leaving as the Head Coach of the Rebels team, a State Title, and other
championships Coach Sawyer said, “I love this job. I love my past and
present players and their parents. I love this school and the
communities that feed it. I am very proud of all we have accomplished
the last five years. I have five more years remaining before I can
retire. I would like to retire the head football coach at Strom
Thurmond High School.”
In the five years Sawyer has been head coach he has compiled a
remarkable 52-13 record and a Class AAA state championship in addition
to conference and region championships.
“We have a motto in our football program of “Pride, Class, Courage, and
the Will to Win”,” Coach Sawyer said. “My players and coaches exemplify
that twelve months out of the year. I am very demanding but they do
whatever is asked of them to uphold those principles. We don’t have all
the material things other schools have but we have two things that
can’t be bought: huge hearts and a tremendous work ethic. Those are
things you just don’t find everywhere.”
Coach Sawyer said he wished Greenwood all the best in the upcoming year
but was focused on leading the Rebels into the 2009 season.
