Rebels pick up two wins, Lady Rebels fall
web
posted January 28, 2008
JOHNSTON – The Strom Thurmond High boys'
basketball team picked up victories in one region and one non-region
contest this week. The Rebels improved to 10-9 overall and 5-1 in
Region 4-AAA with a 55-49 win over the Chapin Eagles on Friday.
Strom Thurmond got off to a slow start falling behind 15-7 at the end
of the first quarter against the Eagles. Things started to turn around
in the second as the Rebels went into the halftime locker room up
25-22. That second quarter turn would be enough. The Rebels only
outscored Chapin by three points in the second half.
Forward Leroy Gilchrist had a game-high 24 points for the Rebels while
teammate Justin Smith contributed 12 points. Niles Daniles had 20
points and Bobby Brown 12 points in a losing cause for Chapin.
Tuesday, Strom Thurmond was a 57-47 winner over Greenbrier (GA) High
School.
Strom Thurmond put defensive clamps on Greenbrier early taking a 17-7
lead. The Rebels would maintain a 33-24 lead at the end of the first
half.
Strom Thurmond only scored eight points in the third quarter, but
regained control of the contest in the fourth. Gilchrist and Smith led
the way on offense again with 22 and 19 points respectively. Center Joe
Cook added 10 points to the Strom Thurmond attack.
Andy Gray, with 20, was Greenbrier's only player in double figures.
The Rebels have a chance to force a tie a the top of the region
standings when they host Brookland-Cayce Tuesday night at 7:30 p.m.
Strom Thurmond High's Lady Rebels went winless for the week of region
and non-region basketball competition. Following a 76-51 loss at
Greenbrier (GA) on Tuesday, the Lady Rebels fell 63-54 at region foe
Chapin on Friday.
The
Lady Rebels had
to play from behind after going down 23-6 after the first quarter
against Chapin. The Lady Rebels had a ten-point edge (29-19) over the
second and third quarters, but the first quarter deficit turned out to
be too much for them to overcome.
Courtney Mealing had 32 points with Alexsus Houston adding 14 points
for the Lady Rebels. Strom Thurmond dropped to 9-11 overall and 3-3 in
Region 4-AAA with the loss.
Grace Kemp and Amy Lepper had 10 points apiece to lead Chapin in the
win.
The Greenbrier game had a similar scenario with Strom Thurmond falling
behind 19-9 at the end of the first quarter. Greenbrier continued to
apply the pressure, stretching the lead to 39-21 at the end of the
first half.
Greenbrier continued to add to the lead in the second half on the way
to the victory.
Greenbrier improved to 21-0 overall with the win. Dorian Freeman's 15
points led four players in double figures. Sena Oland, Kaila Hunt and
Ayanna Fairbanks finished with 13 points apiece.
Mealing was the only Lady Rebel in double figures with a game-high 32
points. Strom Thurmond hosts Brookland-Cayce in their next game,
Tuesday at 6 p.m.
