Lady Patriots remain undefeated, Patriots split games
web
posted January 28, 2008
The Wardlaw Academy girls remained
unbeaten while the varsity boys came away with a split of their
basketball games this week. Friday, Wardlaw edged Newberry Academy
38-35 in overtime, but the Newberry Academy boys rebounded to take the
nightcap 41-31.
After falling behind by two points at the end of the first quarter, the
Lady Patriots turned things around to end the first half up 18-13.
Newberry Academy came back to turn things in their favor, scoring 11
points in the third quarter while holding Wardlaw to a single point.
The Lady Patriots had another rally of their own in the fourth quarter
to tie the game at the end of regulation and move on to overtime where
they came away with the victory.
For one of the few times this season, Wardlaw had a different player
lead them in scoring. Anna Yarborough took top honors with 16 points
while leading scorers Elizabeth Stone and Kristina Graves were held to
eight points each. Wardlaw improved to 16-0 and 7-0 in region play with
the victory.
Betty Carter had a game-high 19 points in a losing cause for Newberry
Academy.
The Wardlaw boys were down by three after the first quarter against
Newberry Academy, but could not make up the deficit for the remainder
of the game. Newberry Academy stretched the lead to 24-14 at the end of
the half, and they held on to an advantage despite only scoring six
points in the third quarter.
Chris Smith scored 13 points to lead the way for Newberry Academy.
Kevin Ginn scored nine points to lead the Patriots who fell to 10-6
overall and 6-1 in region play with the loss.
The Lady Patriots opened the week with a 58-34 rout of the CSRA
Warriors on Tuesday. Wardlaw had a six-point advantage at the end of
the first half, but took control of the contest by outscoring the
opposition 35-18 in the second half.
Stone and Graves led four Lady Patriots in double figures with 16 each.
Briggs Belcher finished with 12 and Yarborough 11 points.
Lydia Erdett had a game-high 18 points for the Lady Warriors.
The Wardlaw boys also had a big night with a 72-48 victory in their
game. The CSRA Warriors were in striking distance early on, but a
23-point scoring edge for Wardlaw over the second and third quarters
was more than enough to secure the win.
Ginn had a game-high 22 points to lead four Wardlaw players in double
figures while Shalas Jones had 16 to lead the CSRA Warriors.
Both Wardlaw teams are back on the court Monday when they host Aiken
Christian.
