Rebs pick up important wins, Rebles split games

web posted February 4, 2008
JOHNSTON – The Strom Thurmond High boy’s basketball team had and lost a share of first place in Region4-AAA after this week's action. The Rebels began the week with a 75-68 home win Tuesday over the Brookland-Cayce Bearcats who entered the game unbeaten in region play.

Strom Thurmond was led in the game by forwards Leroy Gilchrist and Justin Smith who finished with 26 and 22 points respectively. Gilchrist is among the conference scoring leaders averaging just under 19 points a game.

Delanta McCoy scored 26 as well to lead three Brookland-Cayce players in double figures. T.J. Boykin finished the game with 14 points and O. B. Johnson 12.

The Rebels lost their share of the top spot following a 51-48 loss at Airport on Friday. Johnathan Jenkins scored 16 points to lead the Eagles in that victory. The Bearcats reclaimed sole possession of first in the region by defeating Chapin by a 60-34 score that same night. McCoy scored 22 for Brookland-Cayce in the win.

Strom Thurmond dropped to 12-8 overall and 6-2 in the region with the loss to Airport.
The final two games of the regular season take place this week. The top two teams are assured of at least one playoff game. The Rebels, currently in second, will need help to win the region again. Tuesday, Strom Thurmond hosts Swansea in the regular season home finale before closing out at Midland Valley on Friday.

The Rebels were victorious over both teams in the first meeting this season. Brookland-Cayce faces Midland Valley and Airport this week. The Bearcats were also victorious over both teams in the first meeting.

Strom Thurmond High's Lady Rebels picked up a pair of wins this week to stay in the hunt for a Region 4-AAA top spot. They began things on Tuesday with a 72-54 home win over Brookland-Cayce and closed out Friday with a 44-32 road win at Airport.

In the win over the Lady Bearcats, Strom Thurmond was led by Courtney Mealing who had a game-high 46 points. Mealing, a junior guard, had a season and career-high of 48 points earlier this season. Teammate Alexsus Houston added 11 points to the offensive total for Strom Thurmond.

Asia Bean was the only Lady Bearcat in double figures with 14 points.
The Lady Rebels improved to 11-11 overall and 5-3 in the region with the win over Airport.

Strom Thurmond led 9-6 after the first quarter, but the Lady Eagles fought back to cut the margin to 17-16 at the end of the half. The third quarter turned out to be the deciding moment of the game as the Lady Rebels finished with a 20-8 scoring edge.
Mealing was the only player on either team in double figures with 29 points. Gina Easler added nine points for the Lady Rebels. Erin Davis had seven points in a losing cause for Airport.

Going into the final week of the regular season, Chapin is in first place with only one region loss. The Lady Rebels square off against Swansea and Midland Valley in the final regular season games. Strom Thurmond defeated both teams in the initial meetings.
