Patriots have winning week

web posted February 4, 2008
JOHNSTON -- Both Wardlaw Academy basketball teams found success during this very busy week. The Lady Patriots downed Aiken Christian 37-24 on Monday before blasting Aiken Prep by a score of 58-8 the next night. Wardlaw improved to 19-0 and 10-0 in SCISA Region 1-A on Friday with a 33-27 home win over Laurens Academy. The varsity boys were 49-40 winners over Aiken Christian, 57-29 victors over Aiken Prep, and edged Laurens Academy 40-38.

Wardlaw and Aiken Christian got off to slow starts on offense. The Lady Patriots took control of the contest with a 24-13 scoring edge over the second and third quarters. Elizabeth Stone and Kristina Graves scored 19 and 10 respectively to lead the way for Wardlaw while two players scored six points apiece to lead Aiken Christian.
The Aiken Prep contest was never in doubt. Stone scored 20 and Anna Yarborough 14 to lead three Lady Patriots in double figures.

The Laurens Academy game was closely fought. Wardlaw had a two point lead a the end of the first quarter and Laurens Academy was not able to overcome that deficit for the remainder of the game. Stone had 12 points to lead Wardlaw while Hannha Caviness had a game-high 16 for Laurens Academy.

The Wardlaw guys were tied 14-14 at the end of the first half with Aiken Christian. An 18-8 scoring edge in the third quarter was enough to propel Wardlaw to the win. Travis Gagnon scored 10 to lead Wardlaw. Adam Soule had a game-high 16 in a losing cause for Aiken Christian.

A total of 11 players got into the scoring column for Wardlaw in the Aiken Prep game. Kevin Ginn led the team with 15 while Gagnon and Justin Ouzts finished with 10 each.
The Patriots held off a fourth quarter rally in Laurens Academy game.  Wardlaw was up 16-12 at the end of the half and stretched the lead to 30-23 after three quarters. The 15 points for Laurens Academy in the fourth was not enough for them to come away with a win.

Stephen Balentine had 13 for Wardlaw who improved to 13-6 overall and 9-1 in region play with the victory. Justin Forhan was the only Laurens Academy player in double figures with 23 points.

Wardlaw closed the week with home games against Greenwood Christian on Saturday.
