Four STH Rebels sign to play college ball
web
posted February 7, 2008
JOHNSTON – Four student athletes signed
scholarships to play college football in the Strom Thurmond High School
Media Center Wednesday to officially put a wrap on the Rebels' 2007
campaign. A large group of family, friends, print and broadcast media
were there to witness the event. The Rebels finished last season with a
record of 8-5 losing in the third round of the Class AAA playoffs. The
school will drop down to the AA classification this year.
Wednesday, Aramis Hillary signed to attend the University of South
Carolina. Sam Broadwater signed to attend Tusculum in Greenville, North
Carolina while Oquendo Curry and Theo Thurmond will be off to Newberry
College.
Each player had highlight moments this past season. Hillary threw for
over 2000 yards and was the team's leading rusher. His combined total
of rushing and passing touchdowns exceeded 30. Hillary will be
competing with the group to become the new starting quarterback at
South Carolina this fall.
Broadwater was among the team's leading sackers of the quarterback from
his defensive end position. Curry was on the way to leading the team in
rushing before going down with a shoulder injury to miss some games in
the regular season. Thurmond was a key contributer on the offensive and
defensive lines. Thurmond had a game late in the season where he was in
on over 100 total plays on offense and defense.
Amid the media crowd, each player offered thoughts on what led to their
final choices.
Hillary said he had wanted to be a Gamecock since a little boy and had
heard stories about Uncle Ira growing up. Now that things are official
Hillary said, "I think this is as good as it gets."
Hillary's uncle Ira starred at South Carolina before going on to play
professionally with the Cincinnati Bengals and Minnesota Vikings.
Aramis will now join older brother Coco in the college football ranks.
Coco was a member of the national champion Appalachian State team.
Brother Antawn, now a coach with Strom Thurmond, had previously signed
a college scholarship as well.
Aramis Hillary said he will announce a major after his freshman year.
Broadwater said that after visiting Tusculum it made the choice clear
in comparison to Newberry and Charleston Southern who were also
interested in a possible scholarship. Broadwater said he will decide
between Sports Medicine and Computer Science as possible majors.
Thurmond was impressed with the style of football played at Newberry.
"They can hang with the big Division I schools," Thurmond said.
Thurmond plans to major in Art at Newberry.
Curry was also impressed with Newberry's success and the chance to
continue as teammates with is friend. Curry is undecided on a major at
the present time. Thurmond and Curry will also get the chance to
reunite with former Rebels Elvin Bussey and Matt Holmes who are already
on the Newberry roster.
"They were one of the main reasons (I decided on Newberry)," Thurmond
added.
It will be interesting when Newberry and Tusculum square off this fall
because the former teammates will be rivals. "It will be difficult, but
exciting to play against somebody you once played with," Curry said.
