Rebels and Lady Rebs end season in second place in lead up to playoffs
web
posted February 11, 2008
JOHNSTON – Head coach Bo Rouse and the
Strom Thurmond High boys' basketball team clinched second place in the
Region 4-AAA basketball standings with a pair of wins in their final
regular season games this week.
Following a 55-52 win over Swansea in their final home game on Tuesday,
Strom Thurmond edged Midland Valley 48-44 on Thursday.
The Swansea game was closely contested before the Rebels eventually
came away with the victory.Leroy Gilchrist scored 16 and Justin Smith
12 points to lead Strom Thurmond in the win.
The Rebels led the Midland Valley contest from start to finish. A 14-9
Strom Thurmond lead at the end of the first quarter held strong at
24-19 at halftime. Midland Valley rallied in the fourth quarter but
could not overcome the early deficit.
One reason the Mustangs kept the contest close was their 6-2 edge in
3-point baskets. The Rebels helped to overcome that deficit by
outscoring Midland Valley 18-4 from the free throw line.
Gilchrist had 19 and Smith 12 to lead the Rebels in the win. Taylor
Grover had 10 points in a losing cause to lead Midland Valley. Strom
Thurmond improved to 13-10 with the victory while Midland Valley fell
to 7-18 with the loss.
The Rebels begin action in the AAA Lower State playoffs as a number two
seed on Tuesday. They will host third seed Bluffton at 7:30 p.m. The
winner of that game has a second round date with the winner of the game
between top seed Crestwood and fourth seed Socastee.
The Strom Thurmond High Lady Rebels edged Airport 39-36 in a tiebreaker
game to finish second in the Region 4-AAA final standings on Friday.
Chapin had secured the region title with a 47-29 victory over the Lady
Eagles on Tuesday.
Strom Thurmond closed out the home part of their regular season
schedule with a 49-39 win over Swansea on Tuesday. Junior guard
Courtney Mealing led the Lady Rebels with a game-high 31 points. She
was the only Strom Thurmond player in double figures although
forward/center Gina Easler was close with nine points.
Karisceda Cotton scored 18 points to lead the offensive attack for
Swansea. The Lady Rebels closed out the regular season with a 51-27 win
at rival Midland Valley on Thursday. Strom Thurmond jumped out to a
15-2 lead at the end of the first quarter and never let the Lady
Mustangs back into the game. Midland Valley did cut the margin to 10
points at the end of the first half, but a 21-point third quarter from
Strom Thurmond turned the game decisively back in their favor.
Mealing was the only player on either team in double figures with 33
points. Strom Thurmond improved to 13-11 overall and 7-3 in region play
with the Midland Valley victory.
As a number two seed, Strom Thurmond will now host third seed Lake
Marion in the opening round of the Class AAA Lower State Playoffs
Tuesday at 6 p.m. The winner of that contest will face the winner of
the Darlington against North Myrtle Beach contest in the second round.
