Rebels season ends with play-off loss to Crestwood, Lady Rebs end with loss to Lake Marion

web posted February 18, 2008
JOHNSTON – Strom Thurmond advanced to the second round of the Class AAA Lower State basketball playoffs with a 78-41 demolition of the Bluffton High Bobcats on Tuesday, however; their season would end with a 62-36 loss at the hands of the top-ranked Crestwood Knights on Friday.

Head coach Bo Rouse said after the Bluffton game he was not sure the team was ready because they were so relaxed before it started, but the performance indicated that he was wrong.

The Rebels put the first six points of the game on the board. One came on a technical before the start because Bluffton did not have their starting five listed. Darlton Altacho scored the first Bobcats' points at the 4:52 mark. Justin Smith, Leroy Gilchrist and Javon Brown combined on the final six to put the Rebels up 12-2 at the end of the opening quarter.

A layup by Mike Ferguson to open the second was the only time Bluffton cut the lead below double digits for the remainder of the half. Gilchrist scored 14 of his game-high 25 points in the quarter as the Rebels took a 31-21 lead into the locker room at halftime. Gilchrist scored inside and outside as the Rebels dominated all parts of the game.
"When he goes, we go," were Rouse's words on Gilchrist.
Strom Thurmond turned the game into a rout with a 24-6 scoring edge in the third quarter. The lead grew to 40-21 before a pair of Bluffton baskets drew a time out. Strom Thurmond outscored Bluffton 15-6 over the remainder of the quarter to take full control of the contest.

Center Joe Cook scored seven of his 10 points during that decisive Strom Thurmond run.

The fourth quarter was more of the same. The crowd came out of their seats when Gilchrist converted an alley oop dunk after several other tries had failed. That made the score 57-27 and the Bobcats would come no closer for the remainder of the contest.
Chris Glover, Mike Kemp, Jeremy Thomas, Jarell Johnson and Tra'ves Bush were some of the other players that contributed to the Strom Thurmond victory.

Altacho had 11 and Louis Brown 10 for the Bobcats who fell to 14-10 with the loss. Smith and Cook had 10 apiece to join Gilchrist in double figures. Strom Thurmond improved to 14-10 with the win.

"I'm very proud of the kids; they did a great job," Rouse said. The Crestwood game was decided in the second half when the Knights exploded for 40 points while holding the Rebels to five baskets. Crestwood improved to 24-1 on the season with the victory.

Strom Thurmond High's Lady Rebels saw their basketball season come to an end with a 53-43 home loss to Lake Marion on Monday. The game also marked the third consecutive year that the Lady Rebels lost in the first round of the state playoffs.

Junior guard Courtney Mealing had a big night for Strom Thurmond, but the Lady Gators shut down the rest of the team.

Mealing, in fact, finished with 42 of the team's 43 points. Amanda Parks converted a free throw in the first quarter for the other point. Lake Marion led 11-7 at the end of the first quarter.

Down by three points in the second quarter, the Lady Rebels moved ahead on a driving basket and 3-pointer by Mealing. Strom Thurmond would go into the halftime locker room up 17-14.

Mealing scored all 10 of the team's points in the third quarter, but it was not enough. Princess Riggins made five of six free throws in the quarter to help Lake Marion back into a 28-23 advantage.

Lake Marion wouild go on to make 23 of 30 attempts from the free throw line in the second half. Several of the free throws came during a decisive run in the fourth quarter that kept the Lady Rebels at bay.

Imani Sellers had 13 and Jasmine Smith 10 points to lead the Lady Gators in the victory.
The Lady Rebels will look to improve on their 13-11 mark under second year head coach Jessica Parker next season. They lose only seniors Alexsus Houston and Danielle Holmes to graduation. Mealing, who averaged over 28 points a game will be one of the most talked about players in the state when Strom Thurmond drops down into the AA classification.
