Lady Pats advance to State Championship Tournament unbeaten
web
posted February 25, 2008
JOHNSTON – Wardlaw Academy's Lady Patriots
added the SCISA Region 1-A Tournament title to their regular season
championship last Monday with a 56-17 win over Laurens Academy. The
semi-final, 54-14 win over Long Cane and tournament final also kept the
Lady Patriots unbeaten going into the State Championship Tournament
that starts today at Orangeburg Prep.
The Wardlaw guys were not as fortunate in the region tournament,
falling 42-25 to Laurens Academy. In a side note, Laurens Academy is
coached by Wardlaw and Presbyterian College graduate Ryan Molony.
In their tournament final, the Lady Patriots took control early jumping
out to a 15-0 advantage to open the game. Defense was a big factor in
helping Wardlaw to the convincing win. They forced Laurens Academy into
31 turnovers in the contest. They also shut down Laurens Academy's top
scorer, Hannah Caviness.
Caviness had a combined 39 points in the two regular season meetings
between the teams, but was held scoreless in the final tournament game.
Wardlaw was led by Elizabeth Stone who filled out a stat sheet with 19
points, four assists and five steals. Teammate Kristina Graves added 15
points and four steals in the win.
The semi-final was even more convincing as the Lady Patriots led 33-0
to open that contest. Graves had 22 points, five assists and three
steals in the game while Stone added 18 points, six assists and four
steals. The duo also combined to go 9 of 13 from 3-point range.
Stone was named Most Valuable Player for the regular season and
tournament. She was joined on the All-Tournament team by Kara Beck
while Graves and Anna Yarborough joined Stone on the All-Region Team.
In the boys' tournament final, a 10-0 second half run broke open a
close game. The Crusaders only led 15-12 at the half. Tournament MVP
Jazz Farhan scored eight in the quarter for Laurens Academy with J.T.
Lee contributing seven more points.
Despite losing the rebounding battle by only two, the Patriots could
not overcome a night where they only made 10 of 48 attempts from the
field. Stephen Balentine and Travis Gagnon led the Patriots with eight
and six points respectively. Gagnon also had seven rebounds in the game.
In their opening round game, Wardlaw blasted Aiken Christian by a score
of 53-27. Balentine led the team with 15 points including a perfect 4-4
from the 3-point line. Ross Williams had 14 points while Justin Ouzts
finished with a "double double" of 10 points and 12 rebounds to go with
four assists.
Gagnon and Ouzts were named to the All-Region Team while Balentine and
Williams made the All-Tournament squad. The Wardlaw boys will also
begin play in the state tournament tonight.
