Strom Thurmond Rebels Sweep Tournament

web posted February 27, 2008
JOHNSTON – The STHS Rebels won the 4th Annual Heritage Classic Tournament on Saturday, February 23rd. The Rebels defeated Silver Bluff High School 4-3 in penalty kicks (PK) that went to sudden death. Derek Vaughn, a sophomore, scored the wining PK. Derek Vaughn described his feelings on taking the sudden death PK as “It was scary.”

Strom Thurmond never held the lead in the game that ultimately decided the tournament champion. Silver Bluff scored two times in the first seventeen minutes of the first half. “I asked the guys at half time if I need to go ahead and give Silver Bluff the trophy. They said ‘No’” explained Northrop, STHS Coach. The Rebels came out in the second half and tied the game with goals from Nathan Legrand and Cesar Navarro. Silver Bluff scored again and in injury time Usiel Custodio scored the tying goal with an assist from Cesar Navarro.

In the first game of the tournament Silver Bluff defeated Fox Creek 9-1 with Silver Bluff playing most of their starters the whole game. The final game of the tournament pitted Fox Creek against the Rebels. The Rebels jumped to an early 3-0 lead in the first 12 minutes of the game. The Rebels began to substitute the bench in the first half. Coach Northrop commented on the Fox Creek game, “Most of our bench came in with a 5-0 lead on Fox Creek. They gave up three goals and two of them were on PKs. They have to pick it up if they want playing time.”

Fox Creek and the Rebels meet again in a scrimmage on Thursday night in North Augusta. All tournament players for the Rebels were: Derek Vaughn, Nathan Legrand, Parker Northrop, Cesar Navarro, Usiel Custodio, Ryan Burns, Cody Canipe, and Ren Fell.
