Lady Patriots Take SCISA Class A State Title

web posted March 3, 2008
JOHNSTON – Wardlaw Academy's Lady Patriots blasted the Low Country Day Marlins 49-25 in the first round of the SCISA Class A State Playoffs on Monday. Wardlaw improved to 26-0 with the win and a second round game with Andrew Jackson on Thursday.

The Wardlaw Academy guys had a first round game with Newberry Academy on Tuesday to determine if they would advance in the tournament. In the opening game, Wardlaw's Elizabeth Stone scored nine of her game-high 23 points in the second quarter helping the team to a 27-17 halftime lead. Stone also had a good night on defense with five steals.

As a team, Wardlaw finished the night with 14 steals. Stone was the only player in double figures with points, but teammates Kara Beck and Anna Yarborough combined for 21 rebounds.

Wardlaw Academy's Lady Patriots returned and had their dream season come to an end with a 41-27 victory over Laurens Academy to claim the South Carolina Independent School's Class A State basketball championship in Sumter Saturday.

Wardlaw finished at 28-0 and joined the list as only the fourth team in school history to finish a season with an unbeaten record. This also marked the seventh basketball championship for the Lady Patriots who have advanced to the state finals eight times in the last 12 years.

Wardlaw's defense set a tone for the game in the early going. Their full court pressure defense caused turnovers that led to easy baskets on offense. Kristina Graves hit a pair of big 3-pointers and Elizabeth Stone scored to help the team to a 13-0 lead. Stone was playing her final game as a senior.

The Lady Crusaders did manage to cut the lead to 22-14 late in the second quarter, but Stone hit a 3-pointer in the closing seconds to give Wardlaw back a double figure lead.

Laurens Academy cut the deficit to six points in the fourth quarter, but an 11-2 run by the Lady Patriots put an end to any rally. Stone finished with a game-high 23 points while Graves added 13 for Wardlaw. Hannah Caviness was the only Laurens Academy player in double figures with 12 points.
