Rebels drop game to Tigers Monday night
web
posted March 19, 2008
JOHNSTON – Swansea High's Tigers ended a
six-game losing streak with an 8-4 baseball win at Strom Thurmond
Monday evening. Rebel starter Josh Wilson and reliever Mike McCary
combined to strike out 14 hitters, but two big innings were enough for
the Tigers to come away with a victory.
The scoring opened when Swansea's Michael McElveen led off the second
with his third homer of the season. McElveen would lead the Tigers by
going 3-3 with three runs scored and two driven in.
The Rebels tied the game in the bottom of the inning without the
benefit of a hit. Kenny Meadows walked the bases loaded before getting
Andrew Friar to hit into a force out at home. Porter Coleman brought in
the run with a ground out to second.
Swansea took the lead for good with three runs in the top of the third.
A run came in following a throwing error on Johnathan Betancourt's
infield hit to third. Another scored on an error in left after
McElveen's single, and Blake Williams doubled in the final run of the
inning.
Swansea stretched the lead to 6-1 with a three-run fifth. A sacrifice
fly followed three walks and another run came in on the second balk of
the inning. Following an RBI single by Brandan Meadows, McCary struck
out two hitters to end the rally.
The Rebels took advantage of Swansea miscues to score a pair of runs in
the bottom of the fifth. Dillon Durham brought in a run with a single
while the other scored after an error on McCary's single to left.
Swansea scored an additional run in the seventh. The Rebels scored a
run and tried to rally again in the bottom of the inning, but Durham
was thrown out trying to score on Jeremy Dix's double to left center
for the final out of the game.

3B- Josh Wilson (ST) HR- McElveen. Leading hitters: Swansea Michael

Strom Thurmond's Lady Rebels pushed a run across in the bottom of the
seventh to edge Fox Creek 4-3 in softball action Monday afternoon. The
Lady Predators had rallied from an early 2-0 deficit. Those runs came
in the bottom of the first. Ashley Dobbs got into scoring position with
a triple to right center. Following an intentional walk to Gina Easler,
both scored when there was a high throw from third on Katelyn
Henderson's ground ball. Fox Creek scored single runs in the third and
fourth before coming back to tie the game at 3-3. The Lady Rebels moved
a runner to third in the bottom of the seventh who came in to score on
a ground ball by Dobbs.
