Gamecocks take National Title

web posted June 30, 2010
OMAHA: NEB – The South Carolina Gamecocks won its first ever national championship in baseball Tuesday night after an 11-inning battle with UCLA. The Gamecocks defeated the UCLA Bruins 2-1, winning the College World Series championship after a walk of Scott Wingo set up the scoring run.

The Gamecocks fell behind 1-0 at the bottom of the 8th inning and went on to tie the game on a UCLA error that led to a 1-1 tie.

Scott Wingo led the game-ending inning with a walk and moved to second after a mishandled ball in the bottom of the 11th inning.

Whit Merrifield nailed a single into right field to set up the game-winning run that sent USC players rushing the field.

After losing their first game in the College World Series, the Gamecocks won six straight games in their determined battle to win its NCAA national championship in Baseball.

Jackie Bradley Jr. was named the Most Outstanding Player by the coaches and players of the USC team.
