Wolves lead league with 10 preseason all-SAC picks, chosen fourth in
coaches' poll
web posted July 23, 2010
ROCK HILL – Newberry College leads the way on the
2010 Preseason All-South Atlantic Conference football team, which was
released by the league office today. The Wolves have a conference-best
10 selections, with three players on the first team and seven on the
second team. The Wolves are predicted to finish fourth in conference
play according to the annual coaches' poll, which was also released on
Thursday. Among the 10 standouts is Johnston resident Matt Holmes.
Wide receiver Brandon Bostick, center Matt Holmes and safety Ron Parker
earned first team nods, while wide receiver David Pressley, tackle
Chase Gamble, tackle Ben Inabinet, defensive end Derrell Kinard,
linebacker R.J. Reeder, linebacker Josh Williams and cornerback Kamaal
McIlwain were all named to the second team. Newberry's 10 preseason
all-conference picks ranks the Wolves just ahead of league favorite
Carson-Newman and Tusculum, which each had nine selections.
Holmes, a senior from Johnston, S.C., has been Newberry's starting
center for the last two seasons and leads the team with 20 consecutive
starts entering the 2010 campaign. In 2009 he graded out at 90% for the
season with 55 pancake blocks in 10 games and no sacks allowed. He was
the anchor of the "Roach Patrol" offensive line that allowed only 11
sacks in 337 passing attempts and ranked 22nd nationally in sacks
allowed.
The team averaged 30.6 pass attempts for every sack allowed and ranked
second in the conference and 32nd in the nation in total offense (410.1
yards per game). Holmes earns preseason first team all-SAC honors for
the second straight season and was a 2009 postseason first team
all-conference honoree.
He was named second team all-Super Region Two by DAKTRONICS, third team
all-Super Region Two by Don Hansen's Football Gazette and was a
regional semifinalist for the Gene Upshaw Award. He was named all-South
Carolina by The State newspaper and the Orangeburg Touchdown Club. He
has also been named to the South Atlantic Conference Commissioner's
Honor Roll for the past three seasons.
