Strom Thurmond Football 2010: The Opponents

SPORTS – Sports Writer Tim Crane is back with his
preseason look at the road the Fighting Rebels will have to travel in
search of another championship. As always it is packed with stats,
highlights, and information on upcoming opponents.
1. Williston Elko: (Region 4 Class 1A;
Enrollment 313) Last year’s record (14-0), last game; beat the Scotts
Branch Eagles for the 1A Div2 State Title on Nov 27th. Last time
ST played WE….These two have never played. The Blue Devils are
led by Dwayne Garrick who is 60-17 as a head coach. WE has four state
titles and eight region titles since 1960. The Blue Devil Defense
had five shutouts while the offense scored 50+ points in eight games
and topped 60+ points in five games. In 2010, the Blue Devils
will take the field with at least four, legitimate, division one
prospects. Williston’s offense averaged 50 ppg and their defense
allowed only 11 ppg in 2009. WE’s largest margin of victory in
2009 = 68-0 win over Wagener-Salley. Largest defeat in 2009 =
Williston was undefeated in 2009.
ST vs WE is set for Aug 20th 7:30 pm at Williston Elko.
2. Lucy C. Laney: (Region 3 Class 2A;
Enrollment 750) Last year’s record (5-5), last game; beat Southeast
Bulloch 35-0 on November 6th. Last time ST played Laney….Sept 7,
2007 ST 7 Laney 13. The all time series is tied 2-2.
ST has outscored SA 91-76. Three of the four games have been
decided by a touchdown or less. The Wildcats are led by Lemuel
Mackey who is 18-13, as a head coach. Laney’s offense averaged
19.1 ppg and their defense allowed 21 ppg in 2009. Laney’s
largest margin of victory in 2009 = 35-0 win over SE Bulloch.
Largest defeat in 2009 = 34-7 loss to Swainsboro.
ST vs Laney is set for Aug 27th 7:30 pm at STHS.
3. Saluda Tigers: (Region 2 Class 2A; Enrollment 596)
Last year’s record (2-8), last game; lost to the Batesburg-Leesville
Panthers 42-17 on October 30th. Last time ST played Saluda….Oct 16th,
2009 ST 40 SAL 0. ST leads the all time series 33-10-3. The
Tigers will be led by Doug Painter who is 97-90 as a head coach.
ST has outscored SAL 925-424 in the series. Strom shut Saluda out 18
times and Saluda shut ST out 3 times, in the series. Largest margin of
victory in the series…Saluda 65 ST 0 on October 26th 1973. 14 games
have been decided by 8 points or less and on two separate occasions
these two played to a 0-0 tie (1962 and 1964). Saluda won back to back
State Titles in 1962 and 1963. Saluda’s offense averaged 18.5 ppg
and their defense allowed 30.5 ppg in 2009. Saluda’s largest margin of
victory in 2009 = 30-7 over Ridge Spring –Monetta. Largest defeat in
2009 = 40-0 to Strom Thurmond.
ST vs Saluda is set for Sept 3rd 7:30pm at
STHS.
4. South Aiken Thoroughbreds: (Region 5 Class 4A;
Enrollment 1448) Last year’s record (4-7), last game; lost to the
Camden Bulldogs 38-14 on November 6th. Last time ST played
SA….Sept 18, 2009 ST 35 SA 0. SA leads the all time series
11-9. ST has outscored SA 378-328. Eight games have been
decided by seven points or less. SA is 10-4 in the last 14 meetings
with ST. The T Breds are led by Jeremy West who is 5-15, as a
head coach. West was head coach of Bluffton before taking over
the Thoroughbreds this season. South Aiken’s offense averaged
19.7 ppg and their defense allowed 25. ppg in 2009. SA’s largest
margin of victory in 2009 = 37-0 win over Swansea. Largest defeat
in 2009 = 35-0 loss to Strom Thurmond.
ST vs SA is set for Sept 17th 7:30 pm at STHS.
5. Silver Bluff Bulldogs: (Region 5 Class 2A;
Enrollment 740) Last year’s record (10-3), last game; lost to the
Cheraw Braves 26-21 on November 13th. Last time ST played SB…Sept
25, 2009 ST 28 SB 12. Thurmond leads the all time series
7-5. Silver Bluff has outscored ST 170-169. The Bulldogs
are led by Al Lown who is 157-54 as a head coach. The Bluff
opened its doors in 1981 and since has five state titles and 18 Region
Titles. Throughout their short history they have played 58 different
opponents and have a winning or tied record against 53 of them.
They had only one season end with a losing record; 1982 (5-7). SB
had a 43-1 record from 1999-2001, winning 2 State Titles in that
timeframe. The Bulldog’s offense averaged 32.3 ppg and their
defense allowed 14 ppg in 2009. SB’s largest margin of victory in
2009 = 56-0 win over Fox Creek. Largest defeat in 2009 = 28-12
loss to Strom Thurmond.
ST vs SB is set for Sept 24th 7:30pm at Silver Bluff.
6. Columbia: (Region 3 Class 2A; Enrollment
750) Last year’s record (7-4), last game; lost to the
Batesburg-Leesville Panthers 60-13 on Nov 6th. Last time ST played
Columbia….Nov 7, 2008 ST 42 Col 0. ST leads the all time series
10-1. The Capitols will be led by Kemper Amick who is 83-55 as a
head coach. ST has outscored Cola 322-100 and has four shutouts
in the series. Columbia’s offense averaged 30 ppg and their
defense allowed 21 ppg in 2009. Their largest margin of victory in 2009
= 45-0 over Brookland Cayce. Largest defeat in 2009 = 60-13 loss to
Batesburg-Leesville.
ST vs Columbia is set for Sept 30th 7:30pm at Columbia. Thursday night
game.
7. Keenan: (Region 3 Class 2A; Enrollment 821)
Last year’s record (8-4), last game; lost to the Abbeville Panthers
28-6 on Nov 13th. Last time ST played Keenan….2003 ST 34 Keenan 19. ST
leads the all time series 18-4. The Raiders are led by Mitchell
Moton who is 16-7 as a head coach. ST has outscored the Keenan
549-212 in the series. The Rebels 2 shutouts and Keenan has 1 in the
series. Keenan’s offense averaged 29 ppg and their defense allowed 19
ppg in 2009. Their largest margin of victory in 2009 = 56-8 over
Bethune Bowman. Largest defeat in 2009 = 28-6 to Abbeville.
ST vs Keenan is set for Oct 8th 7:30pm at STHS.
8. Eau Claire: (Region 3 Class 2A; Enrollment 806)
Last year’s record (1-10), last game; lost to the Strom Thurmond Rebels
43-7 on Nov 6th. ST leads the all time series 9-0. The Shamrocks
will be led by Ronnie Baker who is 1-10 as a head coach. ST has
outscored EC 320-50 in the series. Strom shut Eau Claire out four
times. If there are any positives from Eau Claire’s one win
season last year, it’s that they made the playoffs for the first time
since 1992 with that one victory. The Shamrock offense averaged
10.5 ppg and their defense allowed 34 ppg in 2009. Eau Claire’s largest
margin of victory in 2009 = 25-20 over Lee Central. Largest defeat in
2009 = 53-0 to Fairfield Central.
ST vs Eau Claire is set for Oct 14th 7:30pm at Eau Claire.
Thursday night game.
9. Gilbert Indians: (Region 3 Class 2A;
Enrollment 921) Last year’s record (5-5), last game; lost to the Strom
Thurmond Rebels 21-7 on Oct 30th. Thurmond leads the series 2-0.
Gilbert’s first year of football started in 1972 and the Indians have
accrued 14 winning seasons since. The Indians are led by Barry
Harley, who is 70-131 as a head coach. Since 2002, Gilbert has
only missed the playoffs only twice. The Indians averaged 21.2
ppg and their defense allowed 20.9 ppg in 2009. GIL’s
largest margin of victory in 2009 = 33-7 over Pelion. Largest
defeat in 2009 = 38-7 loss to Batesburg-Leesville.
ST vs Gilbert is set for October 22nd 7:30pm at Gilbert.
10. Batesburg-Leesville Panthers: (Region
3 Class 2A; Enrollment 586) Last year’s record (8-5), last game; lost
to the Abbeville Panthers 37-26 on November 20th. Last time ST
played BL…October 9th, 2009 ST 24 BL 17. ST leads the all time
series 26-19. ST has outscored BL 722-691 in the series. 17
games have been decided by 8 points or less. BL has 4 State
Titles and 18 Conference Titles since 1960. The Panthers are led
by Courntey McInnis who is 64-28 as a head coach. BL’s offense
averaged 28 ppg and their defense allowed 16.8 ppg in 2009. BL’s
largest margin of victory in 2009 = 60-13 over Columbia. BL’s
biggest defeat in 2009 = 39-13 loss to Lexington.
ST vs BL is set for Oct 29th 7:30pm at STHS.
Strom Thurmond Rebels: (Region 3 Class 2A; Enrollment 890) Last year’s
record (10-3) last game; lost to the Central Eagles, 14-9 on November
20th. The Rebel offense averaged 28 ppg and their defense allowed 12.6
ppg in 2009. Largest margin of victory in 2009 = 49-0 over Ridge
Spring Monetta. Largest defeat in 2009 = 27-16 loss to North
Augusta. They have a winning record over every region
opponent. The Rebels have won 2 State Titles and 20 Region Titles
since 1961. The Rebels have had 9 season’s end with a losing
record (73,74,75,76,97,98,00,01,02). ST is led by Lee Sawyer, who
is 62-16 at ST and has an overall record of 71-37 as a head coach.
