Big Time Scrimmage: Newberry at Strom Thurmond Wednesday

By Tim Crane
web posted August 10, 2010

SPORTS – Scrimmages are practices which are used to prepare teams for games.  Scrimmages don’t count in the win or loss column.  But when Newberry travels to Strom Thurmond on Wednesday, this scrimmage will take on an entirely different feel.  There will be two of the state’s best coaches 53 yards away from each other, two teams of similar styles and history with the same goals for 2010; win their regions and make a deep playoff run.

Anything short of this will be considered a letdown, for either team.  Although the scoreboard will not tally the score in this contest, the fans, players and coaches will definitely keep up with it.

Strom Thurmond is led by Lee Saywer.  He won a state title as head coach of Thurmond in 2005.  He also has two state title rings from being defensive coordinator at Greenwood and three rings from being the defensive coordinator at Swansea.  Sawyer is 62-16 at ST and has an overall record of 71-37 as a head coach.  Since he took the reign at Strom Thurmond, the Rebels are 29-1 in region play, with the only loss coming in overtime to Airport (2007).

Newberry will be led by Phil Strickland.  In May, Strickland stepped down as head coach of Gaffney and made the move to Newberry.  He replaces Sam Baird, who was head coach of Newberry since 1989.  Strickland won three state titles during his time as head coach of Gaffney (2003-2009) and he had two state titles while being the head coach of Batesburg Leesville.  His career record is 246-68.

The two are good friends off the field and ultra competitors while being on the field.  Both have been coaches on the North/South Allstar game.  Strickland has been a Shrine Bowl coach (2001) and Sawyer will be one this year.

Strom Thurmond returns a lot of talent from a 10-3 team of 2009.  The Rebels are ranked pre season number one in AA and # 12 overall in the state.  Newberry finished 2009 with a record of 6-5 but the Newberry faithful are excited about the potential this team has with Strickland taking over.

The Rebels and Bulldogs are known for their physical play and strong defenses and have always left everything on the field when they’ve met.  The all time series is led 10-9-1 by Thurmond.

There will be few scrimmages, in the state, that will rival the play of what Thurmond and Newberry are bringing on Wednesday, August 11 at 5:30.
Admission is $2, concessions and merchandise will be available.
