Blue Steel Will Not Break; ST 7 WE 0
By Tim Crane
web posted August 21, 2010
SPORTS – With only 3:03 remaining in a 7-0 game,
Williston had just driven 53 yards in seven plays to Strom’s 20 yard
line. On 3rd and five, after a Blue Devil timeout, Williston
quarterback Tamyn Garrick throws to the corner of the endzone toward
highly touted Mr. Everything Dexter Staley. But Blue Steel
defensive back Cody Johnson went up and took the ball from Staley,
ensuring a shutout and a Strom Thurmond victory.
In a game that exceeded any and all hype, the young Strom Thurmond
Rebels showed the entire state, they are for real and that Blue Steel
may bend, but will not break. Facing a team that returned 10 starters
on offense and 8 on defense from a 14-0 State Championship scoring
machine, Strom Thurmond went into the Devil’s Den and shut out
Williston Elko 7-0.
Williston put together a nine minute drive that went 66 yards to
Thurmond’s six inch line in the 3rd quarter. On first and goal
from the four, Williston handed off to bruising runningback Kendrick
Salley and he took it to the one yard line. 2nd and goal, another
give to Salley but he is stuffed for a one yard loss. 3rd and
goal from the two yard line and Salley gets the nod again as he plows
to the six inch line. On fourth down, with only 1:17 remaining in
the 3rd quarter, Salley is called upon for a fourth consecutive time,
to deliver the knockout blow. But Strom Thurmond’s Blue Steel
Defense met Kendrick at the line of scrimmage, stopping him dead in his
tracks for a turnover on downs and solidifying this Rebel defense as
true Blue Steel.
To follow up such a dramatic goal line stance, the Rebel offense showed
great poise going into the fourth quarter, being backed up at their one
yard line. Two straight quarterback sneaks gave Strom some
breathing room and Yeldell then completed a first down pass to Antonio
Hamilton out to the 15 yard line. But the Rebels found themselves
3rd and 15 at the 10 and it appeared momentum was on the Blue Devil
side. Junior quarterback Raleigh Yeldell rolled out of the pocket
and threw a bullet to Antonio Hamilton for a 30 yard first down strike,
which flipped the field on the Blue Devils and gave Thurmond a distinct
field position advantage for the remainder of the game.
Marquise Lomax stalled the Blue Devil’s first drive of the night when
he picked off Tamyn Garrick and returned it 25 yards to set Thurmond up
at their 47 yard line. Williston Elko would hold the Rebels to a
three and out and put together another promising looking drive.
That drive would take Williston 8:05 minutes to march 70 yards down to
Strom Thurmond’s five yard line. But the Rebel’s defense
pressured Dexter Staley into dropping a would be touchdown pass on 4th
and goal from the five yard line.
Yet again the Blue Devil defense held Thurmond to a three and
out. Williston took over in good field position, at ST’s 41, with
7:43 remaining in the first half. On 3rd and 9 at the 40,
Williston’s Tamyn Garrick decided to challenge Marquise Lomax’s
defensive skills once again. Different play, same result.
Lomax snagged his second pick of the night and fired up the entire
Strom Thurmond side.
With 5:50 remaining in the 2nd quarter, Raleigh Yeldell and his offense
took over at their 39 yard line. The Red Pride Rebel Offense, finally
showed signs of life as they put together an 8 play 61 yard touchdown
drive. But the possession was not without its adversity.
The Rebels were flagged three times and had a fumble in this series. On
2nd down and one at Williston’s 34 yard line, Raleigh Yeldell took a
quarterback keeper down to the 16 yard line where the ball was stripped
out, but a fortuitous bounce lands the ball into Darrius Hammond’s
hands and he advanced it another 11 yards to set Thurmond up 1st and
goal at the five. On 3rd and goal from the one, Yeldell connected
with Antonio Hamilton for the lone score of the game. Trent
Miller split the uprights to put Thurmond out front 7-0, with 1:24
remaining in the 2nd quarter.
The Blue Devils dominated nearly every statistical of the game; time of
possession 29:50 to 18:10, first downs 16 to 7, yards 232 to 163 and
only 4 penalties to Thurmond’s 8. But the Blue Steel Rebels from
Johnston dominated the turnover category while having 0 and forcing
Williston to have 3 and the most important stat of them all; score
7-0. The 2010 Strom Thurmond Rebels may be a very special team,
stay
tuned.
