McKenzie Talbert Named to 2011 PING Junior Solheim Cup U.S. Team
web posted August 24, 2011
BRASELTON, GA. – The final two
members of
the 2011 PING Junior Solheim Cup U.S. Team have been chosen by captain
Meg Mallon, the American Junior Golf Association announced Tuesday.
Summar Roachell of Conway, Ark., and McKenzie Talbert of North Augusta,
S.C., will join 10 preselected teammates on a team of 12 that will
represent their country in the biennial event.
The PING Junior Solheim Cup, patterned after The Solheim Cup, features
the top 12 girls from the United States against those from Europe. A
PING event, the 2011 tournament will be played at Knightsbrook Hotel
& Spa Golf Resort in Trim, Ireland, Sept. 20-21, the days leading
up to The Solheim Cup. The Solheim Cup will be played Sept. 23-25 at
Killeen Castle in County Meath, Ireland.
Roachell recently picked up her first junior golf victory at the Bubba
Conlee Invitational, and followed the win with a statement-making
performance at the U.S. Girls’ Junior where she advanced to the
quarterfinals. At No. 19 in the Polo Golf Rankings, Roachell has
compiled six top-five junior golf finishes.
Talbert, a 2010 Rolex Junior All-American, also has six top-five junior
golf finishes on her resume. Victor at the 2011 Sea Pines Junior
Heritage, she also placed third at the Exide Technologies Junior Open.
A two-time Wyndham Cup participant, Talbert helped the East Team to its
first victory in six years, putting up a 2-2-0 record in the team match
play event.
The 10 players previously named to the U.S. Team were selected based on
a combination of the AJGA’s Polo Golf Rankings and the Golfweek/Sagarin
Junior Girls Rankings as of July 29. Earning entry through the Polo
Golf Rankings were Karen Chung of Livingston, N.J., Jaye Marie Green of
Boca Raton, Fla., Alison Lee of Valencia, Calif., Kyung Kim of
Chandler, Ariz., and Gabriella Then of Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.
Ashlan Ramsey of Milledgeville, Ga., Mariah Stackhouse of Riverdale,
Ga., Esther Lee of Los Alamitos, Calif., Lindsey Weaver of Scottsdale,
Ariz., and Emma Talley of Princeton, Ky., earned their way in based on
their positions in the Golfweek/Sagarin Rankings.
Past PING Junior Solheim Cup U.S. Team members include Paula Creamer
(nine-time LPGA Tour champion and winner of the 2010 U.S. Women’s
Open), Brittany Lincicome (champion at the 2007 Ginn OPEN and 2009
Kraft Nabisco Championship) and Morgan Pressel (champion of the 2007
Kraft Nabisco Championship). Creamer was the first player to make the
move from the PING Junior Solheim Cup to The Solheim Cup Team when she
helped lead the U.S. to victory in 2005 with a 3-1-1 record.
The United States and Europe head into the 2011 competition with the
U.S. leading the series 3-2-0. The team hosting the event has won the
PING Junior Solheim Cup in all five instances.
PING designs, manufactures and markets a complete line of golf
equipment including metal woods, irons, putters and golf bags. The
family-owned company was founded in 1959 by the late Karsten Solheim.
Solheim is the only person to be inducted into the World Golf Hall of
Fame as a golf club manufacturer. Today, the Phoenix-based company is
under the direction of Solheim’s youngest son, John A. Solheim. PING

The American Junior Golf Association is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit
organization dedicated to the overall growth and development of young
men and women who aspire to earn college golf scholarships through
competitive junior golf. The AJGA provides valuable exposure for
college golf scholarships, and has an annual junior membership (boys
and girls ages 12-18) of approximately 5,000 junior golfers from 49
states and more than 40 countries. To ensure scholarship opportunities
for all junior golfers who have the skill, the AJGA created the
Achieving Competitive Excellence (ACE) Grant program to provide
financial assistance to young players in need.
Titleist, the AJGA's National Sponsor, has been the catalyst and
driving force behind the Association's success since 1989. Rolex, which
is in its third decade of AJGA support, became the inaugural AJGA
Premier Partner in 2004. In 2007, after 12 years of support, Polo Ralph
Lauren became the AJGA's second Premier Partner.
AJGA alumni have risen to the top of amateur, collegiate and
professional golf. Former AJGA juniors have compiled more than 500
victories on the PGA and LPGA Tours. AJGA alumni include Stewart Cink,
