Rebels drop season opener to North Augusta

web posted August 27, 2007
NORTH AUGUSTA –  North Augusta ended a three-game losing streak to Strom Thurmond in resounding fashion with a 27-17 win at Yellow Jacket Stadium Friday
night. After electrical storms caused a two-hour delay in the second quarter, Strom Thurmond scored two touchdowns on the way to a 17-0 halftime lead.

This would be the end of the offense for the Rebels as the Yellow Jackets scored four unanswered touchdowns in the second half to secure the win and bring the crowd on the field in celebration.

The scoring started with Strom Thurmond moving 79 yards in four plays. Oquendo Curry had a 30-yard run two plays before Aramis Hillary hit Terrance Butler on a 42-yard touchdown pass. The extra point was blocked making the score 6-0.

North Augusta fumbled the ensuing kickoff and it led to a 23-yard field goal by Cesar Navarro. Strom Thurmond moved into position for a 42-yard field goal attempt on the very first possession of the game, but Navarro's attempt went wide left.

A good kickoff return by Marcus Thurmond gave North Augusta good position after the field goal. Three first down runs by Tidy Johnson moved the ball to the Strom Thurmond goal line. The next play lost yardage, and Strom Thurmond recovered a fumble in the end zone to halt the drive.

Ironically, fumbles would help lead to the downfall of the Rebels as they lost four of six in the game. The Rebels went 80 yards for a touchdown after the turnover. Hillary found Aaron Hutto for a big completion in the drive before eventually scoring on a 9-yard run around right end. Curry ran in the two-point conversion for the 17-0 lead.

Problems in the kicking game helped set up two of North Augusta's second half touchdowns. Punter Cord Butler went to a knee twice to field low snaps giving the Yellow Jackets the ball at the Strom Thurmond 30 and 12-yard line respectively. Quarterback Travis Murphy found Ronald Sims on a 30-yard touchdown pass after the first miscue and Daitrele Dixon on a 4-yard scoring pass after the second.

Between those passes Murphy found an open David Dixon for a 35-yard touchdown with the Yellow Jackets facing a fourth and 15 at the Strom Thurmond 35-yard line. The first touchdown to Sims also came on a fourth and long situation.

Down 20-17 Strom Thurmond lost a fumble in North Augusta territory. On the fifth play of the possession Murphy lofted a pass that Marcus Thurmond took away from the Rebels' defensive back for a 33-yard touchdown. In the celebration, Thurmond spiked the ball and was called for unsportsmanlike conduct. It did not matter as Stephen Stubberfield made his fourth consecutive extra point to make it 27-17 with just under six minutes left in the game.

Strom Thurmond moved from their 28 to the North Augusta 8-yard line on the next possession, but lost another fumble.

North Augusta travels to meet Midland Valley this Friday night while Strom Thurmond hosts Batesburg-Leesville in their home opener.
