Rebels secure 20-7 defeat of Lucy Laney
By Tim Crane
web posted August 28, 2010
SPORTS – One packed house, one electric atmosphere
and six turnovers told the story of Strom Thurmond pulling away from
Laney in the waning moments of Friday night’s football game, 20-7.
The Blue Steel defense continued to silence the critics and shutdown
opponents, while grabbing their 7th interception and 2nd fumble in just
two games. They also proved the Williston shutout was no fluke
but instead great defense. Four different Rebels had an
interception and two other Blue Steel boys recovered fumbles against an
extremely talent laden Lucy C Laney Wildcat team.
Thurmond’s defense forced a Laney fumble on the 2nd play of the game
and the Rebel offense took over at the Wildcat 19 yard line. On
Strom’s fourth play, Malcom Watkins punched in a touchdown from the one
yard line. Trent Miller added the extra point and the Rebels led
7-0 with 9:29 remaining in the 1st quarter.
Laney intercepted a Raleigh Yeldell screen pass with 1:42 to go in the
first and the Wildcats looked primed to score after starting at
Thurmond’s 33 yard line. But the Blue Steel defense rose up for
their season specialty, goal line stance, once again. Laney
attempted to pound the ball in from 1st and goal at the 7 yard line,
twice, but was denied. On 3rd and goal at the four, Cody Johnson
picked off Laney quarterback Leo Myers in the endzone and returned it
out to the three yard line.
The Rebels were able to move out to the 21 yard line before the drive
stalled and Cullen Rhoden once again kicked the field around for the
home team when he nailed a 43 yard punt, placing Laney at their 36 yard
line. This possession would see the Blue Steel Defense get
their first, 3 and out of the season as they came alive and shut down
the visiting Wildcats.
The Red Pride Rebel offense started at their 36 after Laney punted, but
a high snap as Yeldell was changing plays forced the Rebels to
backpedal for a 20 yard loss on first down. With 5:26 remaining
in the first half, the Rebel’s faced a punting situation from the 18
yard line. Cullen Rhoden put the foot into the pigskin once again
as he got off a 44 yard punt to relieve some pressure on Thurmond’s
defense.
But the field position wouldn’t be enough to keep Laney off the
board. Wide receiver Jeremy Smith found himself uncovered on 3rd
and 4 from the 26th and caught a touchdown pass to put Laney on the
scoreboard. The extra point was successful and tied the game 7-7,
with 3:35 remaining in the 2nd quarter.
Although Laney’s legendary band didn’t march at halftime, the Wildcat
offense began to boogie on down, deep into Rebel territory on their
first drive of the second half. But Friday night’s MVP, Cullen
Rhoden, showed some moves of his own by picking off a Laney pass on 4th
and 4 from the Thurmond 15 yard line and returning it 25 yards out to
the 40.
After the Rebel offense went three and out, Rhoden was called back to
the dance floor and he didn’t disappoint. He got the ball off on
the good foot and sailed it 40 yards to pin Laney down at their 13 yard
line. The Blue Steel defense got another 3 and out to end the
fourth quarter, to follow up Rhoden’s punt.
Thurmond’s offense began to gel as they opened the final period with a
54 yard, 4:51 minute touchdown drive. After starting at their 46
and being forced into 3rd down, Raleigh Yeldell connected with Emmanuel
Brighthop for a spectacular tight rope stepping 3rd down grab, which
kept the drive alive at the 36 yard line. It would take the
Rebels six more plays with the final being a two yard carry by Darrius
Hammonds to break the goal line again. Trent Miller split the
uprights to push Strom back ahead 14-7 with 6:57 to play in the game.
Laney’s ensuing drive didn’t move the chains as Blue Steel defensive
lineman Octavious Brown manhandled the center and greeted quarterback
Leo Myers with a sack on first down. Hykeem Brooks laid the wood
to Laney’s runningback for a two yard loss on second down and Cody
Johnson broke up a deep ball while playing man against the Augusta’s
Chronicle Dream Sixteen receiver Rod Hall to force another three and
out.
After holding the Rebels, Laney got the ball back with 3:53 remaining
and great field position at midfield. On first down, senior
defensive lineman Devonte Farrow attacked the ball and took it from
Laney. But the Red Pride offense was forced into a three and out
and punted back to the Wildcats with 2:55 remaining in
regulation.
Hykeem Brooks jumped the route and intercepted Leo Myer’s pass which
took away any hopes of the Wildcats forcing overtime. With 23
seconds remaining in the game, Darrius Hammond outran and ran over many
Laney defenders on his way to a 28 yard touchdown run. The point
after attempt was blocked but the Rebels closed the deal 20-7.
