Tigers Travel to Thurmond, Early Season Showdown
By Tim Crane
web posted September 2, 2010
SPORTS – A game that means so much for so many from
two neighboring communities will encompass the very meaning of the word
rivalry, under the lights of Strom Thurmond’s stadium, Friday
night. This rivalry is established. It has been since
before Strom Thurmond consolidated from the Johnston Bears and
Edgefield Bulldogs in 1961. Rebels vs Tigers will always bring
out the best of both teams, coaches and fans.
Is it irony or rivalry that has two head coaches wanting to beat their
own Alma Mater? Doug Painter graduated from Strom Thurmond but is
now the head coach at Saluda. Lee Sawyer graduated from Saluda
but is now the head coach of Thurmond. Both have coached at and
against their Alma Maters. Assistants of both schools have ties to the
opposition. Players have relatives and friends on the opposing
bench and stands.
Rivalry is competition. Competitiveness is wanting to beat the
opposition. There is not much more these two teams like more than
beating each other on the gridiron.
The new and improved Saluda Tigers are looking to build off of a first
week win and set the tone for the season with a victory over
Thurmond. Saluda has moved out of the spread and into the Wing
T. A system Coach Painter thinks suits he and his team better
than the spread of last year.
The Rebel’s opened the season with wins over two powerhouse programs
and will look to continue the trend against Saluda before going into a
bye week following this game. One thing the Rebel’s must improve
on is offensive timing. Each play begins with a snap and they
have put some extra emphasis on hiking the ball this week.
“To me, Saluda vs Thurmond has always been a big game, no matter which
side of the field I’ve been on. But it’s also the next game and
we have to get better and progress with each week. I saw a lot of
improvement last week (vs Laney) and I hope to see the same Friday
night. Everyone that has played or coached in this game will always
keep some memories from it. My first year coaching at Saluda,
Thurmond beat us 49-0 and my second year we were in a close one but
lost 14-7 when Omar Collier scored a touchdown. You don’t forget
this like that in this rivalry.”—Lee Sawyer.
Strom Thurmond’s Key to
victory:
Saluda’s new offense is hard to prepare for and teams can’t simulate it
if they don’t run it. Coach Painter went to it for clock control,
which gives them a better chance to win. To be successful, we
must win the turnover battle, make them punt, and play solid
defense. Keeping field position is ultra important; we must keep
them from starting at midfield.
All-time Series:
ST leads the all time series 33-10-3.
Series is 7-4 over the past eleven meetings in favor of Thurmond.
Fourteen games have been decided by eight points or less and on two
separate occasions they played to a 0-0 tie.
