Rebels Trounce Mustangs In Penalty-Riddled game

web posted September 8, 2018

SPORTS - The Midland Valley Mustangs rolled into Johnston Friday evening hoping to snap their 0-2 start, but those hopes were dashed by the hosting Strom Thurmond team who amassed 27 unanswered points in the first quarter.
Despite the fact that the Rebels were winning, one fan remarked that the Strom Thurmond penalties accounted for a good portion of Midland Valley's yardage in the game.
Thurmond received the ball first, and after a couple of big gains by RB Stanley Hill and RB Charquez Booker, Hill scored on a short run.  The point after missed and the score was 6-0.
The Mustangs dropped the ball on the ensuing kick off and the Rebels recovered the loose pigskin on the Midland Valley 18 yard line.  A couple of plays later, Hill trotted in for another touchdown.  Hunter Bledsoe made good on the extra point bringing the score to 13-0.
Midland Valley stalled on their next possession, and when attempting to punt, the ball was snapped over the punter's head.  Thurmond recovered the ball on Midland Valley's 22 yard line.  A couple of plays later, senior, Ford Williams scored a touchdown on a 16 yard reception from QB Jequan Harris.  The extra point made it 20-0.
After Midland Valley's next unfruitful possession, the Rebels took over.  This series of downs lasted a very long time with all of the penalties, however, Robert West was finally able to score.  The extra point was good and the Mustangs found themselves down by 27 points at the close of the first quarter.
In the second quarter, Stanley Hill picked up two more touchdowns and with the extra point trys, the score stood at 41-0.
The Midland Valley team came alive in the 3rd quarter, scoring their first touchdown of the game.  On Thurmond's next possession, a new quarterback, sophomore, Patrick Westbrook took the helm.
An interception by Jalen Hammonds was ran back to the Mustang 48 yard line, but the Rebels sputtered and ended up punting to Midland Valley.  The Mustang quarterback, Harper Puckett went long, finding a receiver downfield who took it in for the score.
With the score at 41-14, Midland Valley successfully executed an on-side kick, and after another big pass, and a short run, ended up in the end zone again bring the contest to 41-20 after the two-point conversion failed.
Another on-side kick was attempted, but the Rebels scooped it up leaving only 1:30 seconds on the clock.  A couple of plays later, the score would become final, 41-20.
