Strom Thurmond Jayvee Beats Ridge Spring Monetta, 2-0 on Season
By Tim Crane
web posted September 9, 2011
SPORTS – Thurmond quarterback Tyree Stidem
scored to put the Rebels on the board 6-0 early in the first quarter.
This touchdown was set up by an interception. The Trojans came back to
take an 8-6 lead early in the 2nd quarter. The lead changed again when
Kendall Hill grabbed a Ridge Spring pass and took it 60 yards for a
touchdown. This put Thurmond back on top 12-8 with 6:32 to play in the
first half.
Ridge Spring’s 17 man team would not go quietly as they fought back to
take a 16-12 halftime lead, then moved out front 22-12 by the end of
the 3rd quarter.
The young Blue Steel defense finally rose up and shutdown the Trojans
in the fourth quarter by not allowing any further scoring.
Deleonta Bates got the Rebel ground game going, scoring with 9:10 to
play, bringing the Rebels within four points; 18-22.
Thurmond had a chance to take the lead with 1st and goal at the 1 yard
line but a false start on the Rebels aided Ridge Spring’s defense in
taking over on downs with 3:15 to play. After a three and out,
RSM took an intentional safety to avoid punting from their endzone;
22-20 RSM with 1:05 left in the game.
The Trojans attempted an onside kick but it was recovered by Thurmond
near midfield. With only 41 seconds left in regulation the Rebels
had to convert a 4th and 10 to keep hope alive. After the pass
and catch was completed for a first down Thurmond was within striking
distance. Tyree Stidem punched in the game winning touchdown with
only 20 seconds remaining on the clock and the Rebels won 26-22.
The Jayvee Rebels are 2-0 and will host South Aiken next week.
