Sports with Tim Crane: Around the Region This Week

By Tim Crane
web posted September 14, 2010

SPORTS – Here is the weekly round-up of the action around the Region from last week’s games. Strom Thurmond did not play due to a bye week which gives them an extra week to prepare to host South Aiken at home in Johnston. Eau Claire captured their second win of the season with a 34-20 victory over Dreher, pushing them into third place in the region.

Batesburg-Leesville earned their first win of the season with a convincing 21-0 defeat of Newberry and former Panther head coach Phil Strickland. Keenan fell to a much improved Swansea team 7-0, who is led by former Strom Thurmond offensive coordinator Chad Leaphart. Gilbert remains the cellar dweller of R3, after being routed by Mid Carolina 54-0.

Strom Thurmond continues to sport the best defense in region III and one of the best in the entire state.  Columbia has the best offense in the region, averaging 34 points per game. Gilbert has the second worst offense in 2A thus far, averaging a mere 3 points per game.  Eau Claire has already earned twice as many wins as they had last season.

Last time Gilbert started 0-3 was 2003; they finished 1-9. Eau Claire has only started 2-2 twice in the past 17 years (2006 and 1993). In 2006 they finished 2-8 and 1993 they ended the season 3-7.
