Edgefield Xtreme Wins Again

By John Brown
web posted October 20, 2011

AIKEN – On a night better suited for football than baseball, the Edgefield Xtreme would notch win number six of the CSRA Fall League season Wednesday night with a 8-4 victory over the Aiken Revenge. Edgefield would start the scoring in the top half of the first inning when Hunter Cadiere would single with two outs and quickly steal two bases to arrive at 3rd.

After Will Mottel would draw a walk, Jikeal Brown would single Cadiere home for the games first run. With Mottel and Brown both in scoring position, Josh Knight would step to the plate and drive a pitch into left field, scoring both Edgefield runners and making the score 3-0. In the bottom of the first inning, Edgefield pitcher Will Mottel would handle the Revenge easily, facing only 3 batters. In the second inning Aiken would push a single run across the plate after Edgefield committed its only fielding error of the night.

In the Edgefield half of the third inning, both Reid Gossett and Hunter Cadiere would reach on walks. Both players would eventually score by stealing home to make the score 5-1 in favor of Edgefield.

Cardiere would then come on in relief of Mottel for the third and forth innings and continue what has been total dominance from the mound throughout the season. On the night, he would face only six batters over his two innings of work, striking out 5 and getting the sixth batter to ground out.

In the Edgefield 5th, leadoff hitter Reid Gossett would once again draw a walk and quickly steal his way to 3rd base. Jared Bass would then triple to deep left field, allowing Gossett to score.  Bass would then steal home on a passed ball, scoring his first run of the night.  Hunter Cadiere would then pick up his second hit of the game, a hard hit single that would make its way through the infield.  Will Mottel would then step to the plate and drive a pitch to the warning track of the 225' field, easily scoring Cadiere from second. That would end the scoring for Edgefield making the score Xtreme 8 and The Revenge 1.

In the final inning, relief pitcher William Prince would run into trouble when he would issue walks to the first two batters faced and then give up a base hit to the third Revenge hitter. All 3 Revenge batters would cross the plate, making the score 8-4 Edgefield.

"I may have pulled William too quickly tonight but I've watched him pitch for several years now and he just looked to be struggling from the start. It was very cold and windy tonight and that's just rough on a young pitcher," remarked Manager John Brown Jr.

Brown would then bring Jared Bass to the mound for the final 3 outs of the game and the save. Bass would give up only 1 hit while being helped out by his defense, with the best play coming from center fielder, Jikeal Brown on a diving one handed catch to preserve the win.

The win moves Edgefield's overall record to 6 wins and 3 losses on the season.  Edgefield will be back in action again next Monday night when they face off against the league leading Carolina Calypso.
