Rebels Travel to Batesburg Looking to Finish Perfect Regular Season

By Tim Crane
web posted October 27, 2011

SPORTS – The Fighting Rebels will take the highway 23 ride to Batesburg Friday looking to finish the regular season with a 10-0 record.  They are currently 9-0, on a record scoring pace of 46 points per game and could become just the eighth team in school history to finish the regular season without a loss by beating Batesburg this week.

While Thurmond is riding high, Batesburg is having one of the worst seasons in their history.  The Panthers are 1-8 on the year and haven’t been able to muster any sign of life outside of their lone victory over Eau Claire.  The Panthers are playing a lot of underclassmen and are currently in rebuilding mode, but a win Friday over rival Strom Thurmond would go a long way in healing some of their growing pains this season.

It would be easy for many teams to overlook 1-8 Batesburg, especially after having the season that Thurmond is, but these Rebels prepare hard each week and respect every opponent.

“We were already talking about Batesburg Friday night in the locker room after the Gilbert game.  It’s a rivalry and no matter what either school’s record is, both teams get up to play this game.  My team and I always enjoy playing Batesburg.  No extra motivation is needed to get up for this one.  Both schools want to beat the other.”  Lee Sawyer’s take on his 9-0 Rebels traveling to 1-8 Batesburg.

Although Thurmond has racked up huge numbers this year, the starters haven’t played but one full game.  Besides the Laney game, many of the Rebel first stringers haven’t seen the fourth quarter.  Going into the playoffs with a bye week, the team needs as many game time reps as possible.  “Last week we planned to give the starters substantial playing time, but we didn’t anticipate the score being 56-0 at halftime.  Since we had a second half running clock we allowed them to play the first series of the third quarter, but got them out of their after that because it was the right thing to do.”  Sawyer when asked about the significance of starters not playing four quarters going in to the playoffs.

If the Rebels keep the momentum going this week, they have a chance to join a prestigious class of teams that finished the regular season undefeated.  The 2011 team would be number eight in the first fifty years to complete a regular season without a loss.

“It’s one of the things we’ve talked about.  At the beginning of the season some things we want to accomplish is to acquire at least ten wins, be practicing on Thanksgiving, and have an undefeated regular season.  Friday night’s game is an important for us in that we could do what only a few teams have been able to do.”  Lee Sawyer on completing a perfect regular season.

Key’s to Victory:
“Regardless of what kind of year they are having, Batesburg is going to have a good tailback.  Their quarterback is young but very athletic.  They aren’t going to throw it a lot but we have to be ready for the play action pass.  They are good at setting up the pass with a good run game.”---Lee Sawyer

By the Numbers:
Offensively:  ST 46 ppg  BL 14 ppg
Defensively: ST 8 ppg  BL 30 ppg

All time series:
Thurmond leads 27-19 and has won the last four meetings and eight of the last nine.

Last Game:
Thurmond 77 Gilbert 6
Keenan 28 Batesburg 6

Previous Meeting:
ST 31 BL 0

Matchup:  An undefeated Rebel team traveling to a rival that’s having their worse season in history.  The Panthers will be looking to play spoiler while the Rebels take the field with a goal of finishing what they started.
