JET Middle Schools Prevails in Showdown over Merriwether
By Tim Crane
web posted October 27, 2011
SPORTS – The JET Eagles finished the
season with a thrilling 40-22 win over Merriwether Wednesday
night. Sanchez Singleton put the Eagles on the board by going 51
yards to pay dirt on his first touch of the evening. Keeley Marchant
cut the lead 6-3 when she connected a field goal with 5:57 to
play in the first quarter for the Mustangs.
JET showed balance offensively as quarterback Padgett Sumner connected
a 45 yard touchdown pass to Donte Stover. Sanchez Singleton
converted the two point play pushing JET out front 14-6 with 4:40 to go
in the second quarter. The Mustangs fortune wouldn’t get any
better when Eagle defender Grayson Cornwell scooped and scored a
Merriwether fumble from 25 yards out to extend the JET’s lead
20-3.
The Mustangs cut the lead as time expired in the first half when
DeAndre Ryans connected a 10 yard pass to Keli Lovett. After two
quarters JET was on top 20-9.
Chad Gilchrist broke a 72 yard touchdown run to open the 3rd quarter
soaring the Eagle lead 26-9. But the Mustangs came right back
with a DeAndre Ryan’s 27 yard touchdown run. Keeley Marchant
nailed the extra point, cutting the lead 26-16 with 3:41 to go in the
3rd quarter.
Sanchez Singleton electrified the crowd and dampened any thoughts of a
Merriwether comeback when he took the ensuing kickoff 60+ yards for a
touchdown. Fred Martin connected the extra point and JET’s lead
would be insurmountable at the 3:36 mark of the 3rd quarter, 33-16.
Keveon Broadwater scooped a JET fumble and rumbled 50 yards for the
final Mustang score with 5:54 to play in the game, which moved the
score 33-22 in favor of JET. The Eagles would put together one
final drive, capped off by another Sanchez Singleton touchdown run with
just under one minute to play. Fred Martin split the uprights and
JET went on to win 40-22.
Merriwether ends their season at 4-4 while JET finished 7-1. It
was a great game by both teams and coaches. Strom Thurmond has a
very bright future with the talent coming up from both of these
schools.
