Talbert Three-Peats at 3A State Golf Tournament

SPORTS – McKenzie Talbert, golfing phenom
from Edgefield County, won her third consecutive 3A Individual State
Title at Quail Creek Golf Course in Conway S.C. on October
24th & 25th. Talbert finished the two day tournament with a 1 over
par score of 145 after shooting 72 and 73. Two years ago she set the
course record by firing a four under par 68 and then broke her own
record last year with a 67, finishing at -6 for the two day tournament
in 2010.
The course was revamped before this year’s tournament, erasing all the
previous course records. “Although she won the tournament, she was
still a little disappointed in her two day score of 145 after going
under par the last two years.” Strom Thurmond Golf Coach Nick
Lorimer said.
Talbert, a junior at Strom Thurmond, has played in this tournament
since the seventh grade, never finishing outside of the top four. As a
seventh grader she placed fourth and in the eighth grade she placed 3rd
before running off consecutive victories the last three years. This is
only one of the many accolades Talbert has earned throughout her young
prestigious career. After being offered by too many colleges from
around the country to list, she verbally committed to Clemson. Talbert
will be the first female golfer to sign and play with the Tigers as
they get their new female golf team under way in the Fall of 2013.
She has collected six top-5 finishes in AJGA events in the past three
years. In September, at the Junior Solheim Cup held in Trim Ireland,
Talbert represented the United States well by helping her team retain
the cup and she won the 2011 Sea Pines Junior Heritage.
Talbert is currently ranked as South Carolina’s top junior female
player.
According to Strom Thurmond Golf Coach Nick Lorimer she is the top
player on his boys’ team and a pleasure to coach. “We don’t have a
girls golf team at Thurmond so McKenzie plays on the boys team. At a
lot of tournaments we attend, you can hear the other teams making
comments about us bringing a girl and saying there is no way they are
going to let a female out play them. But more times than not she gets
the last word,” Lorimer said.
“She is the top player on our team and can compete with anyone from
around the state. People ask me if I helped her get this good, I
just laugh and say I haven’t messed her game up yet. The truth is she
has unbelievable natural talent and a great work ethic. There is no
doubt in my mind she will be successful at Clemson and wherever she
decides to go in the future.”
