JV Rebels Rout Batesburg, Finish Season Undefeated

SPORTS – The young Rebels completed a perfect 9-0 season with blowout 35-7 win over rival Batesburg Leesville. After holding Batesburg out of the endzone, the offense took the field for the first time and marched 90 yards, scoring on a 7 yard Deleonta Bates run.  Cole Fell, little brother to former Rebel standout Ren Fell, split the uprights giving Strom a 7-0 lead with 3:17 in the opening quarter.

The defense held the Panthers on the ensuing drive, giving the offense possession in good field position at their 43 yard line.  Travonte Watkins broke a 44 yard run on the series first play, setting Tyree Stidem up for a 13 yard quarterback touchdown scamper on the next play.  When the dust settled, after two quick plays, Thurmond was up 14-0 in the first quarter.

Stidem, who has seen substantial time during some varsity games this season, would find paydirt on Thurmond’s next possession.   Facing 4th and goal from the five yard line, he faked a handoff to Travonte Watkins and scooted up the middle for another Rebel touchdown.  After Fell’s kick did not fail, the young Rebels were up 21-0 with 5:58 to play in the first half.

The Panther’s would score their only points of the evening on a 55 yard pass as time expired to end the 2nd quarter.

Tailback Travonte Watkins again pushed the Rebel lead to 21 points by dragging two Batesburg defenders into the endzone for the last five yards of a 16 yard run.   A perfect junior varsity season would not be in doubt after the Rebels went up 28-7 with 5:46 to play in the 3rd quarter.

Lucky Bailey’s sack and Kendall Hill’s interception would cage any thoughts of a Panther comeback at the end of the third quarter.  The icing on the cake came when Deleonta Bates hit the visitor sideline for a 62 yard burst, setting Strom up 1st in goal at the three.  Just a few plays later Bates punched in the final touchdown of the year for the Rebels.

Congratulations to the Junior Varsity head coach Dusty Triplett and his assistants Mike Wood, Jamie Johnson and Handy McManus on an outstanding perfect 9-0 season.  The future looks bright for Strom Thurmond football in the coming years.
