Preview:  Last Regular Season Game, Thurmond at Gilbert

By Tim Crane
web posted October 29, 2009
SPORTS – Gilbert (5-4, 1-3) will be looking to finish the season on a good note.  After starting the season 4-1, the Indians have ran into hard times during region play; only producing one win against Saluda.  “We haven’t been effective on offense the last three weeks, but I think we have some things worked out now and should be a lot better this week.” Gilbert head coach Barry Harley said.

Strom Thurmond (7-2, 4-0) will attempt to keep the momentum flowing into the playoffs.  With last week’s victory over Newberry, the Rebels ensured themselves at least two home playoff games. It’s important for the Rebels to play with intensity this week and to carry it over into the playoffs.“I told my guys they must have a championship type attitude coming into this game. We cannot afford to backslide going into the playoffs and it would mean a lot to see 8-2 after starting 1-2.” ST head coach Lee Sawyer.

Gilbert will throw the ball as much as anybody.  This should help the Blue Steel defense see some different things heading into the playoffs, after playing multiple run oriented teams.

Coaches Corner:
“Thurmond is a very good football team.  To be successful we must make some big plays, control the ball on offense and negate their speed.”—Barry Harley
“Their sophomore quarterback (Conner Owings) has gained a lot confidence over the season just like our sophomore quarterback has.  To compliment him they have a solid group of receivers.  We must play good pass defense against these guys.  They are very big and strong on the defensive front, we must be able to get by them to be successful.”—Lee Sawyer

Could be a letdown?  In the big scheme of things, this game doesn’t mean anything to the Rebels. But the Rebels are 28-1 in region play under Sawyer’s reign the past six seasons. That means they come to play each and every week. The Rebels will not be looking past the Indians this week.

Matchup:  Battle of the gun slinging sophomore quarterbacks.  Both teams operate out of the spread with young quarterbacks that will be looking to finish the regular season on high points.

Alltime Series:  Thurmond leads 1-0.
