Big Plays Push Thurmond Past Gilbert 21-7
By Tim Crane
web
posted November 2, 2009
SPORTS – Sophomore talent Raleigh Yeldell
didn’t play two full quarters, but that was all the time the starting
quarterback needed to lift the Rebels to their seventh straight
victory. Yeldell went down after a 50 yard run at the six minute
mark of the second quarter and did not return for the remainder of the
game.
Thurmond opened the game backed up at their own 10 yard line but the
Rebels would only need four plays to get into the endzone. Tyler Glover
lit the scoreboard up when he caught a pass from Yeldell and broke two
tackles on his way to a 61 yard touchdown. Sam Northrop split the
uprights to put Thurmond out front 7-0 with 9:53 to go in the first
quarter.
Gilbert looked to move the chains on their second possession of the
night, but Marcelis Thompson separated the receiver from the ball and a
first down, with a bigtime hit, forcing Gilbert into punt
formation. An errant snap would prove costly for the Indians as
Dominique Scott barreled through blockers and picked up the high snap
then returned it 18 yards for Thurmond’s second score of the
night. After Northrop’s point after, Strom led 14-0 with 5:03
remaining in the first quarter.
The Blue Steel defense held for yet another three and out on Gilbert’s
ensuing drive. After the punt, the Rebel offense took over at
their 34 yard line with 3:33 left in the first quarter. The
Indian defense looked to make a stand when they held Nick Williamson to
zero yards on the first play of the drive. But Williamson displayed too
much speed when he took a screen pass 66 yards for a Rebel touchdown on
the second play of the drive. Northrop continued his straight
kicking ways as he nailed the extra point. ST was out in front
21-0 at the 2:38 mark of the first quarter.
Gilbert wasn’t ready to quit on their final game of the year. The
Indians marched 70 yards and scored on a ten yard touchdown pass when
Connor Owings connected with Dylan Skinner in the endzone. After the
Indian extra point Thurmond led 21-7 with 11:53 remaining in the second
quarter.
Thurmond returned the errant snap favor to Gilbert on 4th and 9 at the
Rebel 38. The snap sailed back to the five yard line as it went
over Rebel punter Cullen Rhoden’s head. It looked as if Gilbert was
about to pull within a touchdown with first and goal at the five, but
the Blue Steel defense stood strong and was aided by a Gilbert bad snap
which put the Indians back to the 19 yard line on second down.
Marcelis Thompson appeared to have his third interception of the season
on the third down play, but the official saw something the rest of us
didn’t and ruled it incomplete. This allowed the Indians a field goal
attempt, which was no good.
The Rebels came roaring back by moving the ball 70 yards in four plays
to set up first and goal at the ten, after a Yeldell quarterback keeper
went for 50 yards. Yeldell came out of the game after this play
and Gilbert’s defense made a goal line stand at the one foot line to
force a turnover on downs, four plays later.
Thurmond missed another scoring opportunity with 34 seconds remaining
in the third quarter when Northrop’s 34 yard field goal attempt was no
good due to it being partially blocked by Bam Robinson.
With Yeldell out, Nick Williamson and Desmond Davis split time in the
quarterback roll. The fourth quarter saw the Rebels operate out
of the wildcat formation with Williamson taking the direct snaps.
Nick ran over tacklers to move the Rebels within field goal range, but
Northrop’s kicked sailed just wide left from 28 yards out with 8:33
remaining in the game.
The Indians were still not ready to give up. Johnny Bower’s faked
a punt on 4th and 10 at the Gilbert 40 and rushed 22 yards to the Rebel
38 with just over six minutes remaining. Gilbert had the
momentum, but just two plays later Marcelis “I’m always around the
ball” Thompson recovered a high snap to give Strom the ball back.
The Rebels began marching on what looked to be another promising drive
which started at their 41 yard line with 5:48 to go in the game.
Quick Nick Williamson continued pounding the ball out of the wildcat
formation, but threw an interception in the endzone on first and goal
at the seven. Gilbert took over but couldn’t move it across
midfield and Thurmond ran the clock out on their last
possession.
What Happened: An explosive 1st quarter saw the Rebels jump out 21-0
was enough cushion for the entire game. Thurmond moved the ball
up and down the field but missed a few scoring opportunities. The
Blue Steel defense played lights out, forcing Gilbert to seven (3 and
outs) on 11 possessions.
