Well Represented: Strom Thurmond at the North South Allstar Game
By Tim Crane
web
posted November 5, 2009
SPORTS – Two players and one coach from
Strom Thurmond have been selected to participate in the 62nd Annual
North South Allstar game, which will be played at Myrtle Beach High
School on December 12th. Eighty eight of the state’s top players
and twelve of the state’s top head coaches are selected to participate
in this prestigious game.
Strom Thurmond will represent the North roster this season.
Marcelis Thompson, senior linebacker, was selected due to his
outstanding performance this season. Whenever Thompson is on the
field, he is always around the football. He displays as much
heart and character as anyone on the field. He has 76 tackles,
two interceptions (both returned for touchdowns), four blocked point
after attempts, one fumble recovery and too many bonecrushing hits to
list.
Jonathon “Jon Jon” Williams, senior offensive lineman, was selected due
to his outstanding performance this season. Jon Jon is listed as
6’4” 235lbs and is freakishly strong. Williams was a starter his
sophomore season, but sat out his junior year due to a shoulder
injury. This season, he has been making up for lost times as he
has been pushing opposing defensive players around the field.
Jonathan is so talented that he has even seen playing time as a
linebacker and a defensive end this season.
Rebel Head Coach Lee Sawyer was selected to be an assistant coach by
the Coaches Association. Sawyer has five region titles, one state
championship and a 60-15 record as head coach of Strom Thurmond.
His Rebel teams are 29-1 in region play and have made the playoffs in
each of his first six seasons as head coach. Sawyer will be
coaching inside and outside linebackers on the North team.
Assistant coach’s selections are based on tenure and performance.
Usual time for a good head coach to make the North/South roster is
approximately ten years. After a few times of being selected as
an assistant, one can qualify to be a head coach of the North South
game.
“I was very pleased when I heard that Lee made the team. He does
an outstanding job as head coach and we are all very proud of Strom
Thurmond and Lee. I can assure you that Lee and his two players
made this team on merit. They are very good at what they
do. Coach Sawyer and I have a long history that goes back even
before my days at Batesburg-Leesville. I consider him a close
friend and a heck of a football coach. He and his players will be
a great asset to my team.” Gaffney Head Coach and North team Head
Coach Phil Strickland said.
Where: Doug Shaw Memorial Stadium, Myrtle Beach High School
When: Kickoff is Noon December 12th
Series: North leads 34-25-2
Tickets are $15 at the gate
