Preview of Round 1 Playoffs - Eau Claire at Thurmond

By Tim Crane
web posted November 6, 2009
SPORTS – Eau Claire (1-9, 1-4) grabbed the number four seed in region IV with a victory over Lee Central in region play.  There was a three way tie for the final playoff spot in region IV and the Shamrocks beat out Andrew Jackson and Lee Central by allowing the fewest points in their games among each other.  The Shamrocks are now in the playoffs and on their way to Strom Thurmond (8-2, 5-0) this Friday.

This is the first time since 1992 that Eau Claire has made post season play.

Strom Thurmond is in familiar territory this week as they are at home with a number one seed in the playoffs.  Five of the last six post seasons have started this way for the Rebels.  After some close calls in a very tough region three, it will be important for Thurmond to finish off opponents in the playoffs.  “We must finish strong in every game in the playoffs.  We will continue to prepare hard and be ready to play four complete quarters no matter who we are facing,”  Rebel coach Lee Sawyer said.

Keys to victory for Thurmond:  “(We) must get pressure on their quarterback and play physical.  Field position will be key in this game as they have the potential to move the ball effectively with their offense.   They have good speed at the skill positions, so we must play smart and wear them down,” Coach Sawyer said.

Set the record straight: There are no easy roads in AA football to the title.  32 teams will take the field and battle it out over five weeks for the crown.  Number one seed’s earn a home game versus a fourth seed, due to their exceptional performance of winning their regions in the regular season.  In round two, the top 16 teams remain to play it out and the battles continue from there.  The top teams will play each other as the field narrows.

Matchup:  A fired up Eau Claire team that hasn’t been in the playoffs for 17 years will come to Johnston looking to advance to round two.  Can Strom Thurmond keep their focus and generate some rhythm and momentum by finishing off the Shamrocks?

All-time Series:  Thurmond leads 8-0.  The Rebels average margin of victory in the series is 29 points.  The closest game between the two teams was a14-13 finish in 1992.  Coincidentally, that’s the last season Eau Claire made the playoffs.
