Preview: Playoffs Round II, Broome at Thurmond

By Tim Crane
web posted November 12, 2009
SPORTS – Its round two of the South Carolina AA State Playoffs and the Centurions of Gettys Broome High School, from Spartanburg, will make the trip to the Midlands to face our Strom Thurmond Rebels.  It has been 29 years since Broome and Thurmond faced off on the football field.

Broome won the AA state title in 2004 and Thurmond took the AAA crown in 2005; neither team has been to the big dance since, but they are both trying to get back this season.

With week one of the post season in the books, the field narrows to only 16 teams remaining this week.  These are the top teams AA has to offer and the competition is fierce from here out.

Broome (7-4) overall, finished as the number two seed from Region II with a 4-1 conference record.  Last week the Centurions had an impressive win over Emerald and will look to keep the momentum going this week.  “All of my players are very excited to be in this position.  I have been here three years and this is the first time we have been in the second round of the playoffs," Todd Staley said.

Strom Thurmond (9-2) routed Eau Claire with multiple starters on the sideline, last week.  This week it will be important for the all the Rebels to be healthy and ready to go.  “We should have just about everyone back this week.  Hopefully they will all be full speed.  Broome is a very good football team and we must have our “A” game to be successful Friday night," Coach Lee Sawyer said.

Coaches Corner:
“Thurmond is a well coached and very athletic team.  Those two things can be a nightmare for opponents.  We must mix up the run and pass and be able to stop their running game to be successful.”---Todd Staley Broome Head Coach

“They have a great mix on offense; they have a very good quarterback, receiver and runningback.  We must win the field position battle, limit the big plays, and play discipline football when they go to the option.” ---Lee Sawyer.

Matchup:  Mirror image teams face off; both run the spread offense and a 3-5-3 defense.

Alltime Series:  Thurmond leads 1-0.
