Thurmond Sweeps Broome Out of the Playoffs, 31-12

By Tim Crane
web posted November 16, 2009
SPORTS – Martinez Gallman took the second half kickoff 85 yards down the right sideline towards the scoreboard, out running everyone on the field, including multiple players that had angles on him, for Strom’s third score of the night. After Northrop split the uprights the Rebels led 21-0 with 11:48 remaining in third and they were well on their way to Pageland SC for round three of the playoffs.

Broome received the game’s opening kickoff and proceeded to march, with ease, from their 25 yard line to Thurmond’s 10 in only six plays. But the Blue Steel defense wouldn’t break as they shutdown the versatile spread offense forcing the Centurions into a field goal situation. Marcelis “I’m always around the ball” Thompson blew past Broome’s offensive line and blocked the attempt, keeping the score 0-0.

The Centurion defense held the Rebels on the ensuing drive, forcing a punt. Broome took the ball from their 27 yard line all the way to the Rebel’s three before the Blue Steel rose up, once again.

Start of the second quarter, 3rd and goal at the Rebel 3 yard line, Broome rushes around the right side for a touchdown, but was flagged for holding. After the penalty and an incomplete 3rd and long the Centurions were forced to attempt another field; this time coming up short on the try.

After a change of possession, Vince Phillips stripped Broome’s runningback Ronnie Leggett and returned the ball 17 yards to set Thurmond up at the Broome 34 yard line, but Broome’s defense held on forcing the Rebels to punt.

Nick Williamson proved that he was not only quick, but also powerful, as he scored from three yards out while breaking tackles to put ST on the scoreboard. Sam Northrop delivered the point after and Thurmond led 7-0 with 3:49 remaining in the second quarter.

Dominique Scott shook things up for Broome’s offense as he created and recovered a fumble on the Centurion’s next possession. This would be the spark needed for the Rebel offense to turn it up a notch - and they did.  Raleigh Yeldell capped off a four play, 53 yard drive with a nine yard touchdown run as he bullied past would be defenders. Norththorp slammed the extra point and the Rebels were out in front 14-0, with only 1:55 remaining in the first half.

Deikory Williams picked off a 50 yard Chase Henry pass to end the first half and keep the Broome off the scoreboard, when he went up and took the ball from the would be receiver.

Gettys Broome displayed poise when they marched 80 yards in 10 plays following Gallman’s electrifying kickoff return. Chase Henry connected with Tyler Massey for an eleven yard touchdown pass. After Marcelis “this is my specialty” Thompson blocked another point after attempt, ST led 21-6 with 7:45 to go in the third quarter.

Northrop showed plenty of leg and accuracy with a 30 yard field goal at the 3:15 mark of the 3rd quarter to push Strom out to a 24-6 lead.

Broome fought back once again, this time with a 70 yard drive capped off by a two yard touchdown pass from Chase Henry to Thomas weeks. The two point conversion was unsuccessful but the Rebels lead was cut 24-12 with 11:51 remaining in the game.

Tony Stepney stalls any ambitions the Centurions had of advancing to the third round when he picked off Chase Henry with 9:06 remaining in the game. This set Thurmond up at Broome’s 29 yard line and Nick Williamson began to impose his will on the Broome defense once again.

Williamson took four direct snaps out of the Wild Rebel formation, dragging tacklers down the field and ultimately into the endzone from 12 yards out for Thurmond's final score of the night. Sam Northrop remained perfect on the night when he split the uprights and put the ball into the back parking lot.

Thurmond wins 31-12.

What Happened: Thurmond’s Blue Steel defense bent, but wouldn’t break as they gave up 351 yards but created four turnovers (2 interceptions and 2 fumble recoveries) and held a potent Broome offense to a dismal 12 points. Strom’s offensive line imposed their will on Broome’s defensive front by continuously pounding the ball between the tackles for nearly 200 yards on the ground.
