Matt Holmes of Johnston named to All-South Atlantic Conference football
teams
web posted November 18, 2010
SPORTS – Five Newberry College Wolves have been
named to the 2010 All-South Atlantic Conference football teams as
announced by the conference office today. Offensive lineman Matt
Holmes, defensive back Ron Parker and wide receiver David Pressley were
named to the first team, while defensive lineman Arterio Arnold and
linebacker Apollo Stretch were named to the second team.
Holmes, a senior from Johnston, S.C., anchored an offensive line which
allowed only 12 sacks in 365 pass dropbacks this season. The 12 sacks
were the fewest allowed by a SAC team this year. This is the
third season Holmes has earned all-SAC honors, making the second team
in 2008 and the first team in 2009 and 2010. He was a national
semifinalist for the National Football Foundation's Campbell Trophy,
one of only 12 Division II players to earn the honor and the only
player from the SAC and Super Region Two. He was named first team
all-region by Daktronics in 2009 and was named all-South Carolina by
The State and the Orangeburg Touchdown Club in 2009. The Gene Upshaw
Award nominee completes his Newberry career with an impressive string
of 30 consecutive starts.
Parker, a senior from St. Helena Island, S.C., earns all-SAC first team
honors for the second straight season. The six time All-American and
2009 SAC Defensive Player of the Year led the conference in
interceptions and fumble recoveries while making 59 tackles in his
senior season. Parker finished the regular season ranked 14th
nationally in interceptions with 0.56 per game, and was one of fewer
than 20 players at all levels of collegiate football to record eight
takeaways this season, snagging five interceptions and recovering three
fumbles. He had a career-best 16 tackles at Mars Hill and had a
defensive takeaway in six of his nine games played, including two
straight games with two takeaways and three straight games with a
fumble recovery, including a 72-yard fumble return for a touchdown
against Catawba.
Pressley, a senior from Anderson, S.C., wrapped up a stellar career
with a record-breaking season. Pressley established new school records
for receptions (86 catches) and receiving yardage (1,117 yards),
becoming the first Newberry player to record over 1,000 receiving yards
in a season. He had 11 receiving touchdowns - the second most in a
Newberry season - and 12 total touchdowns. He ranks second in Newberry
history in career receptions (148 catches) and receiving touchdowns (17
receiving touchdowns) and fifth in career receiving yardage (1,860
yards). He had seven games with over 100 receiving yards this season
and four games with over 150 receiving yards, including a career-high
183 yards in the season finale against Wingate. He finished the regular
season leading the conference in receiving yards per game (111.7
yards), which ranked ninth nationally, and second in the league in
receptions per game (8.6 catches per game), which ranked sixth
nationally.
Arnold, a redshirt freshman from Greenville, S.C., earns second team
all-SAC honors after a spectacular first season in the scarlet and
gray. Arnold led the South Atlantic Conference in tackles for loss per
game, averaging 1.4 stops behind the line in each contest. His average
of 7.2 tackles per game ranked 11th best in the league. He had 72 total
tackles this season, with 14 tackles for loss, three sacks and nine
quarterback hurries. He notched a career-high 13 tackles against
Carson-Newman.
Stretch, a junior from Columbia, S.C., earns all-SAC honors for the
first time in his career. He led the Wolves with 79 tackles, with his
7.9 tackles per game ranking seventh-most in the conference. He had
three games with more than 10 tackles, including a career-high 14
tackles in the season finale against Wingate. He had eight tackles for
loss, a sack, a forced fumble, a fumble recovery and four quarterback
hurries.
Tusculum College record-setting quarterback Bo Cordell was named the
South Atlantic Conference Offensive Player of the Year, while
Lenoir-Rhyne defensive back Marcus Shuford, who spearheaded the
league’s best defense, was named the Defensive Player of the Year.
Wingate University head coach Joe Reich, who guided the Bulldogs to
their first-ever conference football title, was named Coach of the Year.
Wingate and Catawba College led the way with 10 All-Conference
selections each.
Brevard College running back Kelvin Jeter, who gained 1,145 yards in
his rookie season, was named the Offensive Freshman of the Year.
Catawba defensive lineman Damien Lee, who had seven sacks and 12
tackles for loss, was named the Defensive Freshman of the Year.
The Jacobs Blocking Trophy went to Lenoir-Rhyne offensive lineman
Chandler Rearden. The Jacobs Blocking Trophy is presented to the top
lineman in the league. Rearden anchored an offensive line that averaged
319.6 yards rushing per game, the best in NCAA Division II.
Catawba College quarterback Patrick Dennis received the Football
Scholar-Athlete Award.
The head coaches in the conference select the All-Conference teams.
Cordell, a sophomore, led the nation with 4,657 passing yards, the
third-most in NCAA history and setting a conference record. He was one
of five Pioneers named to the first-team offense. He was joined by wide
receiver Deonte’ Gist, who set single-season school records with 96
catches for 1,183 yards, offensive lineman Hannibal Ruiz, long snapper
Skylar West and place kicker Gareth Rowlands, who had a SAC-record 21
field goals.
Shuford led a Lenoir-Rhyne defense that led the conference in total
defense, pass defense, rushing defense, and scoring defense. Shuford, a
senior safety, recorded 78 tackles and had three interceptions. He was
one of six Bears named to the All-Conference team. Shuford was joined
on the first-team defense by defensive lineman Brandon Martin and
linebacker Demetrius Green, while Rearden was a first-team pick on
offense.
Wingate had four first-team selections in running back Nelson Woods,
who rushed for 1,055 yards, offensive lineman Mike Arndt, linebacker
Greg Harmon and return specialist Perry Floyd. Floyd was a two-time
All-Conference selection, earning second-team honors at wide receiver.
Carson-Newman College had nine total All-Conference selections,
including four on the first team. Defensive back Mario Russell was
named to the first team for the third year in a row. He is joined by
offensive lineman Michael Tribue, last year’s Jacobs Blocking Trophy
winner, punter Chris Jones and defensive lineman Zeke Andrews.
Catawba had three first-team selections on the defense. Defensive back
Jumal Rolle, who led the league in interceptions and forced fumbles,
was joined by lineman Julian Hartsell and return specialist LJ McCray.
Five of Mars Hill College’s six All-Conference selections were named to
the first team. Running back Jonas Randolph, who led the conference in
rushing for the second year in a row, is joined on the first team
offense by wide-receiver P.J. Gore and tight end Allen Woerner.
Linebacker Rudy Cabral, who led the conference with 104 total tackles,
and defensive lineman Maurice Harris, who had a league-best 11 sacks,
were named to the first team defense.
Newberry had five total All-Conference selections, including three on
the first team. Wide receiver David Pressley, who set school records
for receptions and receiving yardage, was joined by offensive lineman
Matt Holmes and defensive back Ron Parker, the 2009 SAC Defensive
Player of the Year, who had 69 tackles and a league-best five
interceptions.
Brevard College also had five on the All-Conference team, with Jeter a
first-team pick on offense, while linebacker Prince Simunyu was a
first-team pick on defense.
Dennis is a senior quarterback from Durham, N.C., majoring in
Therapuetic Recreation and carries a 3.807 GPA.
He is a three-year starter for the Indians, and holds school records
for career passing efficiency, career completion percentage and
single-season passing efficiency. He threw for a career-high 384 yards
against Newberry this season, the fourth-best performance in school
history. He has thrown for 45 touchdowns in his career.
Dennis graduated last May, and is currently in graduate school. He was
named to the Presidential Honor Roll twice and to the Dean’s List four
times. He was a Presidential Scholar and a member of Alpha Chi honor
society. He was named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District
team in 2008.
Dennis has volunteered as a mentor and tutor at local elementary and
middle schools. He also worked as a classroom volunteer for children
with autism and other special needs. He also has helped at a local soup
kitchen.
