Preview: Playoffs Round 2 Newberry at Strom Thurmond

By: Tim Crane
web posted November 19, 2015
SPORTS- Strom Thurmond (10-1) hosts Newberry (9-2) in round two of the AA Division I state playoffs this Friday night, with a trip to the Upper State Finals on the line.

The Rebels are coming off a huge 45-13 win over Mid Carolina last week in which they turned things on in the second half scoring 24 points in the 3rd quarter.

North South Allstar Chad Gilchrist is sitting on 1200 rushing yards entering the week, while quarterback Tyrece Nick has accounted for over 2000 offensive yards and 21 scores for the Rebels.

Newberry racked up over 400 yards of offense on Pendleton during round one with a 42-17 victory. Leading their offense is Shrine Bowler Yafari Werts.  Werts has accounted for 946 yards on the ground, 809 yards thru the air and 17 touchdowns.

The Bulldogs also have Shrine Bowl offensive lineman Demarcus Gilmore and a North-South selection on the defensive line in Jaceree Caldwell.

“Newberry is a talented team and they are led by a hall of fame coach in Phil Strickland.  The strength of their offense is the quarterback Werts.  They love playing power football and lining up in the Power I.  Strickland is notorious for controlling the games and time of possession.  We have to do a great job on first downs, limiting them to 2-3 yards, not 4-5 yards.  We have to make them punt instead of continuously moving the chains.

Offensively we got to make first downs and keep the ball away from their offense.  We must win the battle upfront-they do a real good job of getting off the ball. As always we must protect the ball and not give them extra possessions” said Coach Hillary.

The winner of this game will face the winner of Fairfield Central-Woodruff.

All Region II team advanced to round two of the playoffs; Abbeville, Batesburg-Leesville, Saluda and Strom Thurmond.
